At TReND, we remain committed to supporting our community, but meaningful progress requires shared responsibility across institutions, conference organizers, and visa authorities.
Science moves forward when everyone has a fair chance to be part of it.

We echo the ALBA Network’s call for change and remain optimistic that through continued dialogue and collective action, we can move toward a system where scientists from underrepresented and mobility restricted backgrounds are fully supported to participate in global scientific events.
Notably, these alumni came from different countries across Africa, yet experienced similar outcomes, highlighting how widespread and systemic these barriers are.
At TReND, visa barriers continue to impact our community. Alumni with fully funded travel grants for Cosyne 2025 and 2026 faced repeated visa rejections, even after reapplying and receiving support. All incurred personal costs and missed these key opportunities
“Participation in science should be determined by talent and contribution, not by nationality or mobility privilege.” ALBA Network
We stand with the @network-alba.bsky.social in raising urgent concerns about visa and mobility barriers in science.
