I'm referring to Star Ocean 3: Til the End of Time.

Granted, one of my favorite entries in a different series suffered from similar anachronistic issues, some of them coming from carrying on some characters/aspects from the previous games.

I might, however, be shot if I say what that game is. I've been led to understand it's universally reviled.

Like, mentally, I jokingly think Reliq's family and childhood neighbors heads' would explode if they saw the farming equipment and methods coming out of S9.

Oh yeah, no argument there. Some of the biggest entries in the series are more "modern" than XIV, but they had their own world and aesthetic where that kind of style made sense.

XIV's in a weird space where it's quasi-medieval but introduces things that don't necessarily fit the setting.

And telling their story brings me a lot of personal comfort.

My current longfic obsession with them was initially built on Nananji stirring up trouble once they'd grown more comfortable—intentionally crossing boundaries to gauge Reliq's response and because he thought he was doing a good thing.

My focus on them is generally very "iyashikei," but I do also enjoy sprinkling in conflicts that show everything isn't perfect in their little paradise.

Both Reliq and Nananji have their own insecurities and demons they deal with that make working with them fun for me creatively.

While respecting the individual responsibilities that keep them apart, they prioritize spending time together whenever possible.
Whether it's the simple joy of living in proximity, a shared outing, or a quiet evening of cuddling, their moments together balance out the other parts of their lives.

Reliq has only one partner: Nananji Nononji, an author and columnist for The Mythril Eye.
Their relationship is a cozy one built on mutual support, trust, and individualism. What began as a supportive, healing friendship turned into a relationship that fosters their individual growth.

The real nightmare scenario here would be if an Ascian actually managed to find and use the corpse of Reliq's father.
Then, once the scheme was in motion, they'd just have to "die" and vacate the body to further radicalize Reliq, leaving the Ascian free to pursue another scheme.

Oooo, there are a few good options for Reliq.
The immediate answer is the shell of Nald'Thal on his chest.

As he honed his crafting, though, I can also see him getting Byregot's hand on either his wrist, a sentimental symbol of The Builder guiding his hands as he works.

It would simply be a matter of the Ascians picking up the threads of their previous scheme and twisting them to modern convenience.
Ironically, hinging on a legacy at its core, Reliq's own desperation, indignation, and fanaticism would blind him to the hypocrisy as he sought a "new equilibrium."
