Oh yes, certainly for a metroidvania. It's all about the feel with this genre and less about the art. Nail the gameplay loop first and then put the rest of it together.

IMO, always get mechanics to "good enough". This helps you decide what's fun/not fun, what needs work, and perhaps inspire you to create new mechanics along the way. The sooner you get your game to a playable state, the sooner you'll be able to see it all start coming together.
