DEI DESERVES LESS RESEARCH?

Racial health disparities in the U.S. result in roughly 74,000 to over 80,000 excess deaths annually among Black Americans.
Other People of Color are also affected.

This Isn't Trading. It's Theft from Your Retirement. Someone keeps making perfectly-timed bets right before the President speaks. The victims are your pension, your 401(k), and the country I took an oath to defend.

Fifteen minutes before the President announced he was pausing strikes on Iran, somebody moved $500 million in oil futures. Somebody knew. Somebody told them. Or somebody is them.

You kind of get used to the naked inhumanity of Trumpism, it's odd to see a callback to the clothed-in-MBA-euphemisms inhumanity of respectable conservatism.

The New York Times is now blocking The Wayback Machine from accessing its articles.

That means you'll no longer be able to view archived versions of NYT stories published in 2026 and beyond on archive.org.

(All those posts you see tracking changes to NYT headlines and ledes? They relied on WBM).

Don’t New Yorkers call these bodegas? Of course this denizen of NYC for his formative years never heard it called something else.

Reports that may ultimately never get past the preprint stage *cough*? Better than not doing/reporting in the first place.

A pattern of never getting around to studying roughly the same stuff in both sexes without at least one demonstration it doesn’t matter? Not so good.

4 days ago 0 0 1 0

Which brings me to the real politik part. I still do not think every paper in my field has to be a fully powered sex diffs investigation. What I do believe is that PIs should be held to a good faith effort standard. One paper of “we’ll get to the females next” excusing…ok.

When there are not a bunch of prior studies on which to make predictions, ok, fine, maybe. But you can’t pick the no-diffs side of a very mixed existing literature to justify not (at least minimally) powering to contrast the sexes.

4 days ago 1 0 1 0

Which has never made sense to me, since we DO have prior lit in the drug / rat world that sometimes sex differences exist. I just can’t see running groups with 4 per sex. We are *often* going to see individual diffs that *might* indicate a sex diff but the halfsies design will not be able to say.

Communication of this study was motivated in part by a prior paper which found no sex difference and claimed their result justified no longer powering studies to detect such differences. At best they supported the “halfsies” version of SABV.

Two of the officers targeted by Mr. Hegseth are Black and two are women on a promotion list that consisted of 29 other officers, most of whom are white men. Mr. Hegseth’s highly unusual decision to remove the officers prompted some senior military officials to question whether they were being singled out because of their race or gender, officials said.

Mr. Hegseth had been pressing Mr. Driscoll and General George for months to remove the officers from the promotion list. But Mr. Driscoll and General George refused, citing the officers’ long records of exemplary service.

When you have senior white male military officers willing to end their career by raising concerns about the blocking of Black and female officers, it feels safe to say this isn't about ending DEI: the better historical parallel is Wilson's resegregation of the bureaucracy

Gilead refuses to sell groundbreaking HIV prevention drug to MSF Blocking humanitarian organizations from accessing a medical breakthrough puts vulnerable people across the world in danger.

Today, MSF is going public with something we've been fighting behind closed doors for months: Gilead will not sell us their new HIV drug, lenacapavir.

The sticking point isn't even price, they just refuse to sell.

Recent release of NIH fellowship funding for FY2025 reminded me of this post where I addressed the long standing government interest in training scientists and in asking them to do science thereafter.

Good story overall, yes. But I’ve never once until now heard San Diego referred to as “Biotech Beach”.
