I don't meddle with coercitive tools or approaches, but do not judge guardians who have / are using them. I simply believe we're all doing the best we can and love helping people find ways around them so everybody involved feels better at the end of the day.

I'm also very Gay but that's irrelevant.

Officially opening remote consults for reactive dogs and their humans (Aggression towards dogs and humans, phobias / fearfullness, resource guarding..)

I know bluesky isn't the best place to advertise that but I figured I'd put that here too just in case. I have one remaining spot at the moment

I do this a few times then start slowing his movement by delaying the marker and treat when I feel he’s ready to slow his pace, eventually bringing him to a walk.

Potential medical components (pain, discomfort) are being investigated, in the meantime on the other end I’m working on giving him alternative options to get this energy out. Here I mark before he jumps up at me, and reinforce by throwing the treat on the other side to have him run it out.

Meet Yoko !

One of the issues his humans have is that he’ll charge the person holding the leash in several scenarios - one of them being after he’s rolled in grass : he almost always jumps up to grab the arms, regularly tearing clothes or inflicting bruises

Sorry for the French comments on this it was made for IG, but here’s a short nail trimming session with Neos - who cannot receive food rewards, so we’re using a brush he really likes as reinforcement instead.

Him lifting his lil paws is my green light ! It’s how he communicates his consent.

Knowing what’s what can be difficult and can require a village - as behavioural consultant I often communicate and consult with vets, petsitters, as well as every person in the dog’s household. This allows a more ethical approach to behaviour modification. If there’s pain, training comes second

Pain can look like many things : fear and aggression but also being « hyper », inability to settle, separation related problems, resource guarding, pulling / inability to connect outside, apathy, going nuts around food or being « picky », sleep disruption, etc etc

It can also be tied to many other things : one of my cases had heavy dysplasia and pain management drastically eased her and her guardians’ daily life for example. This poses an ethical question : when to work on behaviour and when to prioritise medical search and rest through environment.

A lot of reactivity cases I and some colleagues see are tied to digestive problems - some of them going unnoticed for years because the symptoms are more discreet than what a generalist vet would look for.

Did you know that fearful / aggressive behaviours can be tied to health issues ?

They often are - Neos here, for example, is reactive to sounds and movements : his reactions have been alleviated not by training but by finally getting a diagnosis and accommodating his chronical health issues.

We’ve been working on her bitework (as in, taking objects in her mouth. Not the sport.) and the first steps were mostly done through environment like on the video up there. Getting her familiar to carrying things as she hadn’t really done so before us was/is a long journey

Excuse the music this was mounted for IG lol

-> this is a nice way to provide enrichment during meals and get her to grab and move toys around
-> we avoid any toy that can be mistakenly swallowed
-> we make sure she’s engaged but doesn’t appear frustrated. If she does, it’s too difficult,

Kicking things off with some foraging for Kaia - this is done with her usual toys and has been 1 of the ways we’ve encouraged interactions with them (she didn’t play when she got here)

We got her gradually used to it by starting with the empty crate, then one toy in it, two, etc over time

I live with two creatures - Kaia, our rescue husky who struggles with separation related problems and can be reactive to dogs and people at times - And Neos, who’s highly reactive to sounds and movements, partially due to health issues.
