What a crazy week. Just so you know: I’m leaning into the idea that the Pope is a more reliable interpreter of the teachings of Jesus than th President or Vice-President. Over at Substack: greggarrett.substack.com

My colleagues at @academic.oup.com and I are leaning into the forthcoming release and promotion of White Lies. Please reach out if yr community would benefit from a conversation about racial myths and white Christian nationalism. And do please consider pre-ordering! #books #writing

If American forces bomb Iranian power plants and bridges tomorrow, our leaders and military will commit war crimes and we’ll be rightly regarded as an outlaw nation. International law and conventions prohibit the targeting of civilian infrastructure to punish a nation. This is a stupid and evil war.

Tia Levings was a #Tradwife before the term became trendy. She knows what it looks like when conservative religious men have dominion over you. And she knows how we recover. "In conversation with Tia Levings" baptistnews.com/article/in-c... #nokings #books #liberation #justice #recovery #faith

MAGA evangelicals are daily losing their minds about @jamestalarico publicly proclaiming his faith, so they’re publicly proclaiming theirs. But if you’re praying to Jesus that Talarico be stopped by any means necessary, your Jesus is just Donald Trump’s mascot instead of the redeemer of the world.

I did a long hike up into the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness this morning and paused at a waterfall to sing the Trisagion, an ancient prayer. The world is still so full of beauty. Holy Immortal One, have mercy upon us. And: Keep singing. The world needs to hear your voice. Here endeth the lesson.

Americans at the Abbey | Westminster Abbey American academic Greg Garrett marks the 250th anniversary of America’s birth by considering how the relationship between Britain and America is borne out in the Abbey’s monuments, statues and graves.

In honor of America’s 250th birthday Westminster Abbey asked me to write for the Abbey about Americans buried or recognized there. Dr. King is among them. Let’s hold onto to our freedoms and to this long friendship. #writing #England #America250 #goodtrouble www.westminster-abbey.org/about-the-ab...

Jesse Jackson, Charismatic Champion of Civil Rights, Dies at 84

The Rev. Jesse Jackson was with Dr. King when he was shot in Memphis. At the 1984 Dem Conv, he said, “My constituency is the desperate, the damned, the disinherited, the disrespected and the despised.” Rest in peace, and rise in power, Rev. Keep hope alive. www.nytimes.com/2026/02/17/u...

Professors Are Being Watched: ‘We’ve Never Seen This Much Surveillance’

This is how I ended up on Charlie Kirk's watchlist. An incredible conservative misunderstanding (or deliberate misunderstanding) about how education works. Education is not indoctrination, but an invitation to read, write, and think. Anything else IS indocrination. www.nytimes.com/2026/02/04/u...

I sent a draft of a proposal on the importance of diversity—and of a Christian commitment to those on the margins—to my agent. If I am not speaking out for those Jesus called the least of these in Matthew 25 then I am failing my Church and the world. Here endeth the lesson. #goodtrouble #justice

Banging away at the proposal for the diversity book, but this feels both like the pull quote and a way to mark Black History Month. Grateful for the chance to remember, relearn, and recommit. History is in our blood and in our bones and we deny it at our peril. #BlackHistoryMonth #race #justice

Standing up for our neighbors and our nation with a few thousand of my Austin compadres and my fierce beauteous esposa. And @jamestalarico was fire. I interviewed him a year back and was blown away, and every time I hear him I’m just that much more impressed. He is the real deal. Talarico for Texas.

Administration Social Media Posts Echo White Supremacist Messaging

It's no longer the least bit subtle. The worst racism and bigotry on social media is being "echoed" daily by social media in our own government. We are actually paying the salaries of those who write and post these messages of hate that harm America and Americans. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/27/u...

“The tragedy of humankind isn’t that sometimes a few depraved individuals do what the rest of could never do. It’s that the rest of us hide those hateful things from view, never learning that hate grows stronger and more resistant when it’s pushed underground.” @penguinbooksusa.bsky.social

My dear friend and partner in MS the Rev. Andy Andrews sent me a signed copy of The Barn and reading it while watching and teaching @sinnersmovie is breaking me open. And also remembering Dr. King: injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Don’t let anyone lie to you. Monsters are real.
