Berlin's Senator for Economic Affairs Franziska Giffey is in town for London Fintech Week, championing the strong partnership between the two great innovation hubs Berlin and London.

Today, Queen Elizabeth II would have turned 100.

The late monarch remains much admired in Germany, where she was welcomed on five state visits between 1965 & 2015.

Germany will always be grateful for her commitment to the friendship between our two countries.

🇩🇪🇬🇧 ties are thriving due to the #KensingtonTreaty. Take Bristol, for example: twinned with Hanover in 1947 in the spirit of reconciliation, it now has dynamic business, academic & cultural ties with 🇩🇪. Its strong German teaching means @bristoluni.bsky.social is a big contributor to this!

With the #KensingtonTreaty we’re strengthening 🇩🇪🇬🇧 ties. Great progress is being made.

This week, we’ve hosted delegations from the Munich Center for Machine Learning, boosting AI collaboration, and from Dortmund, marking the new Wizz Air London–Dortmund flight connection.

Great honour - I was able to join Secretary of State Peter Kyle as he presented Karl John, a German offshore wind specialist at Department for Business and Trade with an OBE for services to offshore wind investment & supply chain development in the UK. Congratulations, Karl John!

On Yom HaShoah, we remember the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust and honour the survivors who have generously entrusted their stories to us. Germany will continue to fight antisemitism, extremism and hate wherever we find it. This historic responsibility will never end.

One thing is clear, as I visit Brussels today: to deal with the global challenges, from Russia's war in Ukraine to the Middle East, European powers must work together closely. That includes the UK & that is why the 🇪🇺-🇬🇧 reset is of strategic importance!

All in all - it's been a great visit to this vibrant part of the UK. We will continue to strengthen the ties between Germany and the UK as we implement the 🇩🇪🇬🇧 #KensingtonTreaty. This includes ties at a local and regional level! Many thanks to @greatermcr.bsky.social for hosting me!

Delighted to present Prof Friederike Otto with 🇩🇪's Cross of the Order of Merit. As some question the reality of climate change, she provides scientific evidence that it's man-made & shows its effect on extreme weather.

She is also an inspiring example of 🇩🇪🇬🇧 academic exchange.

Many decades after members of their families were unjustly stripped of their right to German citizenship by the Nazis, it feels like an extraordinary and undeserved gift that their descendants have chosen to become German citizens at a ceremony at the Embassy today.

Important debate in the House of Commons on 🇩🇪🇬🇧 relations. The phrase “Vorsprung durch Freundschaft” stuck with me, as MPs highlighted the #KensingtonTreaty as vital in an age of instability. Great to also hear strong support for people-to-people ties, including town twinnings.

Ukraine is ready for a just peace. Putin refuses to negotiate seriously.

For the 25th time, the LSE's German Society is bringing together top speakers from 🇬🇧+🇩🇪 for a week-long Symposium.

Great to open #LSEGermanSymposium 2026 with my UK counterpart Andrew Mitchell. Thanks to the students for their contributions, curiosity and critical thinking on UK-German relations!

In Wales I saw many opportunities for 🇩🇪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 academic and business cooperation at universities and at Newport‘s Semiconductor Cluster.

Around 80 🇩🇪 firms employ about 12k staff in Wales. These firms are looking for German speakers. Investing in MFL at universities is an investment in jobs and growth.

Epiphany singers are a common sight in Germany around 6 January. It was lovely to welcome the 'star singers' (Sternsinger) from St Boniface Church today as they raised money for children in need in exchange for blessings and carols.
