Just heard of the passing of the important Asian theologian, Aloysius Pieris. He was a Jesuit with a PhD in Buddhist Philosophy, who built bridges across the religious-ethnic strife in Sri Lanka. I was challenged by ๐๐ฏ ๐๐ด๐ช๐ข๐ฏ ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ฐ๐จ๐บ ๐ฐ๐ง ๐๐ช๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ during my PhD.

Davidโs World Christianity PhD is an exploration into the theologies and cosmologies of Wangari Maathai (Gikuyu Roman Catholic), Tore Johnsen (Sรกmi Lutheran), and John Chryssavgis (Greek Orthodox). It shows why theologians need to take seriously a range of Christian and Indigenous perspectives.
Congratulations to David Lewis for successfully passing his World Christianity PhD viva!
Thanks also to Professor Victor Ezigbo (Wycliffe College, Toronto) and Dr David Grummet for serving as examiners. #WorldChristianity

Thatโs an amen from me!
Thanks for this. I appreciate the contrast between Western public theology in the midst of โsecularisationโ vs African public theology in the midst of Africa being โnotoriously religiousโ (quoting Mbiti). If we add Asian public theology, is it about Christians punching above their weight?

I should clarify I donโt think itโs a problem to engage the Western canon. It just shouldnโt be limited to the Western canon, but more than just that. So in a recent paper on Chinese theology, Iโm engaging Western and African theology, because it enriched the conversation.
Most of my work is on Chinese theology. I often canโt just write about T. C. Chao or Wang Weifan in the Western academy without situating them against the Western canon. Comparatively, few writing on Western theology would be asked to situate themselves against the Chinese canon.
I think reflex is true to an extent. But the aspirational point comes also from others challenging us to go beyond our preferences.
I think youโre asking a practical question, which is legitimate. Iโm making an aspirational statement.
We will always be idiosyncratic and limited. But we need to be willing to strive beyond our biases to be challenged, surprised, and, ultimately, enriched.
Across the theological, confessional, and geographical spectrum.
Iโm increasing convinced that theologians do not have the luxury of simply engaging their favorite theologians. It does a serious disservice to the catholicity of the church.
