The Urabá region in NW Colombia is an obligatory stop along the migration route of many birds. However, the region's forests are increasingly fragmented. This year, we launched an initiative with local communities to create and enrich a network of habitat islands where hungry migrants can refuel.

To round out her study of shade trees and birds in cacao farms, Vanessa Merritt led workshops about birds and shade trees. 42 cacao farmers and schoolchildren used binoculars, learned to ID local birds, and talked about common shade trees and their uses for birds and people. @fieldornith.bsky.social

Our paper about the flow of nocturnal bird migration through Colombia is finally out today in #ProcB! Using weather radars operated by the #IDEAM, we found that low variability in wind underlies a pace of migration that is far more gradual than at temperate latitudes. #Ornithology 📡🪶🇨🇴
