If they try to distance themselves in the general, they'll piss off the base and maybe draw Trump's wrath on social media as well. The infighting will drag them both down.
And any distance they make will just reinforce Democratic messaging about what's wrong with their leadership.

Trump's in a steady decline with no turnaround in sight.
Right now, Republicans are worried about being outflanked on the right, but as soon as we move past the heart of primary season in May and June, they'll start panicking about the general election and try to escape. It'll be too late.
The theory of the case -- that the SPLC defrauded donors by promising to "dismantle" hate groups while secretly paying informants inside said hate groups, a tactic that it has carried out for nearly half a century -- is completely absurd.
They hate SPLC because it documents hate groups. Including a detailed report on Stephen Miller a long time ago. Google it.

/2 Actually my favorite Michael Jackson story is about defense lawyer Mark Geragos, who was summoned to Neverland Ranch to discuss defending Michael regarding unpleasantness, and left in a waiting room for four hours with “It’s a Small World” playing on infinite loop.
I mean only one ride was really famous.
it's funny how the SPLC was giving millions to literal neo-nazis but absolutely nothing to the antifascists who exposed dozens of neo-nazis
as it becomes clear that Yes has won in VA and gerrymandering will pass, a message to Republican voters:
you brought this on yourselves
you convinced the most fairness-obsessed, That Wouldn’t Be Fair-minded voters in the country to affirmatively vote to put you in the dumpster
you earned this
It's ironic that NOVA folks were the people who helped put Youngkin in the Governor's Manor but Trump 2 has soured them so completely and utterly on the Republican Party currently that they've voted like partisan Democrats in the past three elections.
It's going to be hilarious when the Republican redistricting in Texas backfires.
Incredible shots of the exchange between Rep. AOC and RFK, Jr. at today’s congressional hearing.

No it’s giving up in a prisoner’s dilemma.
Stupid goo goo nonsense. The only way to get fair districting is to pinch republicans in the mouth enough until they agree to fairness. Doing this with Callais days away from ripping up the VRA is so stupid I don’t know where to begin.
It appears that there's a level of elision here between "revenge" and "a proportional response in a conflict that advances strategic aims"
last thought, and i am still thinking through this, is that not only is there nothing wrong with this, it is something to *embrace*. a project of transformation is one way to build a political party into something closer to a political movement.
one of the single most important bursts of legislative activity in the nation's history happened because the governing party did not hesitate to remove their opponents from congress itself when they had the opportunity. 🤷🏿♂️
if there is a path to either national nonpartisan redistricting or proportional representation, it is going to go through one party or another. but the first step toward it actually happening is for that party to win power, and you go to war with the system you have, not the one you want.
the shift to a winner-take-all distribution of electoral votes? a partisan project. the development of the mass political party? a partisan project. antislavery and reconstruction? a partisan project. even direct election of senators comes out of populist agitation in the late 19th century.
but the fact of the matter is that with the notable exception *of* the mid to late 20th century, every major change in our political system and government has been a partisan or ideological political project.
one of the ways the mid to late 20th century political world has distorted the historical memories of even sophisticated observers is in the idea that you can achieve major transformations of american political life through something like bipartisan consensus
RFK Jr. just said that immigration is to blame for the outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases in the U.S., not him.
just saw someone call Kash Patel “J Edgar Boozer” and need to lie down
New from me: RFK Jr., who has spent decades pushing disinformation about the safety of vaccines, insanely insisted to Congress today he's played no role in fueling the resurgence of measles in the U.S.

"Listen, I agree with you. If everyone had their basic needs met, it would, in the long run, cost less for the government, hospitals, taxpayers, and insurance companies... but I'm here about my appendix."
Trump learning how wars work one mistake at a time.
New AP/NORC poll: "President Donald Trump’s approval rating on the economy has slumped over the past month as the Iran war drives prices higher...with even Republicans showing less faith in his leadership."
Overall approval: 33% (-5 from March)
Approval on the economy: 30% (-8% from March)
Trump post: I have always been a big fan of Tim Cook, and likewise, Steve Jobs, but if Steve was not taken from the Planet Earth so young, and ran the company instead of Tim, the company would have done well, but nowhere near as well as it has under Tim. For me it began with a phone call from Tim at the beginning of my First Term. He had a fairly large problem that only I, as President, could fix. Most people would have paid millions of dollars to a consultant, who I probably would not have known, but who would say that he knew me well. The fees would be paid but the job would not have gotten done. When I got the call I said, wow, it’s Tim Apple (Cook!) calling, how big is that? I was very impressed with myself to have the head of Apple calling to “kiss my ass.” Anyway, he explained his problem, a tough one it was, I felt he was right and got it taken care of, quickly and effectively. That was the beginning of a long and very nice relationship.
Even Trump knows Steve Jobs would have hated him. Congrats on this legacy, Tim
