It was a stunningly perfect day all around.
Historically, way harder to dig and maintain a tunnel in soft Central Valley sediments than it was to use Fresno scrapers other steam/horse powered tools to make ditches that had a gradient of about .25”/mi. It’s way more cost effective too. Here’s our TID history.

I definitely was owed a good one. The other prof is going tomorrow and they just shut down 140 again due to impending rain potentially reactivating small rockfall. 😬😬
This segment went up quickly and is already generating electricity across a wide span of canal. It also includes enough vertical clearance to accommodate a small backhoe, as requested by the canal maintenance team.

“I’m a one issue voter. Punishment.” is also how I view every election from now until 2028.
I have been thinking about this lately, so it’s nice to see an article about how fast tracking mineral projects in the US may end up actually slowing or stopping projects all together as mining companies risk their “social license to operate”

Talking weather and climate with with Daniel Swain, @ucanr.edu climate scientist: A conversation regarding the record-smashing warm month of March for the western U.S. and what it means for the region going forward.
While we had lunch and Q&A session about anything and everything related to what we were observing, I made a timelapse of clouds screaming overhead. Definitely seem to have been *orographically influenced and boy did they make for a perfect day. (LOL original post said organically).
Well, if you come up when we’re available we can show you around! But your companies I don’t know much about.

north dome rises above the Royal Aches as short cirrus clouds move from S to N.
It is an 11/10 day here in Yosemite Valley, unbelievably. Here, north dome rises above the Royal Aches as short cirrus-like clouds whisp from S to N. The crowds are LIGHT. Mondays are RAD.
😢 it seems Tui had a life well-lived with you. My condolences.

Thanks for following this body of work, it was an inspiring project for me!

It's probably worth noting we can now consistently run seismometers off of solar and batteries for the entire year in Alaska.
We don't use particularly fancy stuff to do that and it wasn't really reliably possible to do that like 10-15 years ago....
One ocean 🤝 One great T-shirt.
Your purchase of the “Our Ocean Planet” tee not only supports marine research—it also directly supports ocean conservation!
For every shirt sold, its maker, Relic, will fund 30 water-filtering oysters with the Moriches Bay Project.

New Weather West post out this evening: "Unusually active April weather pattern to continue this week, and possibly beyond, as subtropical northeastern Pacific waters reach record warmth."

They are EVERYWHERE at the moment. I’ve already seen three at Don Pedro the past few weeks.

Amazing turnout for our Day of Action to Save NASA Science! Truly inspired by the dedication of our members and advocates who are here with me in D.C.
Very lumpy looking sample of a dark mineral or rock about 3 inches across.
Some people special to me donated their lifelong collection of rock and fossils to the department. One item stood out... I've never held one and rarely seen one for sale. Can any of my geology friends identify it, and explain why it's important in our science?
It was by our Ivy and cornered by our dog and cat apparently.
You know what’s really awesome*? @xenolith.bsky.social shouting at me excitedly to “come see this!” while walking through house with a 5gal bucket. I thought it was going to be a rock or dirt or something. But no. It was a live gopher. *It scared the shit out of me because I was expecting a rock.
No argument from me!
I’m glad history doesn’t repeat itself.
As some folks have mentioned it appears GC was never went to metered reservations like many other popular natl parks (including Yosemite). But… point still stands that NOS defunding and layoffs won’t improve an already terrible situation.
Totally, and Yosemite was like that too until it implemented metered entrance for several years before discontinuing it this year. I had thought GC was on the formerly metered list too.
Yeah, I think you’re correct. I swear I remember reading they also metered like Yosemite and a few other parks.
