Hello I am a caveperson: Is there a difference between Founders Edition RTX 4090s vs third party? Does it feel like theres a decent price point for these now that the party has moved on to next gen? What's a PC caveperson making virtual bleep bloops to do?

"Is this desire for ecological simulation also a kind of capture?" Fabulous essay by Alice Bucknell what it means when the same computing platforms are powering next-gen immersive gaming, long-range climate forecasting and the evaluation of geo-engieneering proposals. www.sum.si/journal-arti...

[Žižek voice] And what is it the hippos were hungry for? The empty, white sphere of fantasy, onto which they—and the children who controlled them—could project their desire. Once captured, each hippo releases this desire, unconsumed, into a pen to contain it, before beginning the search for more.

lollll extremely well said (though FWIW i like lat 90s sears!) 😜

nice! im on it, though honestly have felt a litttle over/underwhelmed making sense of it - @ericbarrydrasin.bsky.social was telling me there are different interface 'skins' you can use with different affordances? I'm excited/interested about these being interoperable, but unsure what that means rly

Finding myself mostly 'how does this new post-platform era work' posting, but: any thoughts resources on federated social media/how that works? Any thoughts on replacing the media-centred tumblr-esque vibe of IG stories without waiting for IG-lite (via bsky/twitter)? thx!

woah! i dont know that but lolll the name. For what its worth i actually love the Discourse forum engine - the monome lines forum and the VCV rack one uses it and it feels clean/easy/legible etc. Yes hubs/discord tho! like, my secret hunch is we'll see something like that as standard inside 10 yrs

hopefully not 'networking' but kind of - i guess the thing is it needs some sort of organizational structure but not a top down corpo-algo. I like forums, or i gotta figure out how to get more adept at new forms of federated social media? Alternate: hoops .net reboot as a forum lol shorturl.at/kymLM

ya! this is super well said - like, i guess thats the thing is it seems like Discord works well as a slightly less real time group text. I guess what i'd love to see is something that's slightly more open (ie, has the possibility of larger communities, new ppl, new zones)

1 year ago 1 0 0 0

yes! cosign all counts/it does feel like forums are the way. Feel like i dont have much bandwidth for it, but parts of me wants to resseruct hoops. net as a forum hang zone lol

aghh totally - i have the EXACT same experience ha. Part of me is playing with idea of a discourse-built forum for our weirdo tribe? feel like would be hard to get critical mass is only thing ha en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discour...

1 year ago 2 0 1 0

I love the fact that Discord has become such a ‘thing’, but have so much trouble using it just bc of interface/infinite scroll layout: soon as a zone gets active, it feels unusable just bc so much noise/so parsing or organization. Am I alone in this?

1 year ago 5 0 3 0

ya! feel like Discord still feels the best as far as critical mass vs non-VC hellscape. the main thing i struggle with is that like, the more active a Discord zone gets, the harder it is for me to keep up with it/stay organizd. I kind of miss the forum days!

1 year ago 1 0 1 0

monome lines forum is nice too!

1 year ago 1 0 1 0

aghh exactly! i've heard mastadon is a bit more flexible in terms of interface/format if i understood correctly, but still not much critical mass. I miss the forum days! Like, i wonder what other metaphors/frames there are beyond twitter-lite/ig-lite/etc
