Suppose you walked down a street swinging an axe round your head. Drunk. And someone didn't see you coming and was killed.

You'd be charged with 2nd degree manslaughter.

Cars create a greater risk of injury than the axe.

But if you choose to argue the reverse, that the right to life is the pre-eminent right, then you must also argue for forced blood/organ donation as well as forced gestation.

Good luck with that.

The true depravity has always been the attempt to treat a human being like some kind of robotic womb with no rights. The right of agency over our own bodies will always take precedence over the right to life of a second party.

The same physiological dependency on another person's blood & organs exits in pregnancy and so the same rules must apply. Consent must be obtained. The mother is free to grant or withhold consent as she chooses. Gestation cannot be demanded as a right. Gestation is a gift not a right.

No-one will have any difficulty understanding that a potential donor's consent must be obtained. Potential donors are free to grant or withhold their consent as they choose. Donation cannot be demanded as a right. Donation is a gift not a right.

Even if for argument's sake we agree that a developing fetus has same right to life as a birthed person, the right of agency over our own bodies very obviously takes precedence.

Consider a patient who will die without a transplant of some kind: a kidney, a piece of liver, some blood.

It is definitely a right: the right of agency over your own body.

Which also includes the right to have sex whenever and however you see fit without being judged (subject only to consent).

Commonwealth Court rules the state constitution includes a fundamental right to abortion • Pennsylvania Capital-Star Susan Frietsche, of the Women’s Law Project, said the Medicaid coverage exclusion was the single largest barrier to abortion access in Pa.

This is a wonderful decision for Pennsylvania! And calling abortion a fundamental right is a satisfying slap in the face to the extremists on the Supreme Court.

No! You can't stop the train and reverse back along the track just to make sure!

Some people... 🤦

The thing about Starmer and Mandelson @mrjamesob.bsky.social isn't so much the mistake of the appointment, as Ed Miliband rightly observed this am, even prime ministers make mistakes

It's about setting standards then applying them fairly, which is what Labour suggested they would do after 14 years

The Trolley Problem

You're standing by a railway switch point. A train is approaching. On one branch of the track, a single baby is tied to the rails. On the other, 20 billionaires. You have to choose which...

Oh come on! I haven't finished explaining yet...!

Even Arron Banks said he'd rather Remain than a soft Brexit which gave him nothing that he wanted.

This matters because of the tight margins. In order to beat Remain Leave voters would have had to near-unanimously get behind a single Brexit option. We know that was not the case.

In order to eliminate the eat-at-home option, above, The Indian and Chinese votes would have to prefer fish 'n chips to eat-in.

However, we know that wasn't the case in the EUref. There were many soft *and* hard Brexiteers who preferred Remain to a type of Brexit they did not want.

Brexit was all about treaties: keep what we have or make new ones. There were a range of options - single market, customs unions, etc

But presenting a multiple choice as a simple, binary vote creates an obvious bias against the option singled out to stand against combined support for all the others

Leave only appeared to win by falsely conflating support for a range of different, mutually-exclusive Brexit options as if this were a single, unified bloc.

There's a psephological term for that: cheating.

Also worth pointing out that we didn't actually vote to leave.

Suppose 7 flat-mates hold a vote: eat in or eat out?

3 - eat at home
2 - fish 'n chips cafe
1 - Indian
1 - Chinese

Which is the most popular option..?

Which is depressing. If we don't have govt willing to lead & make strong case for a fairer society/economy we'll never get a fairer society/economy.

Farage has no influence in Scottish politics. We don't care what he thinks so long as he does it somewhere else.

Half of Scotland wants to "destroy" the United Kingdom. We're fed up of the regular lurches into extreme right-wing politics of which Farage is just the latest, and not the last, example
