I understand why these stories exist but it’s important to be clear that he’s not “saving” 16 billion, he’s choosing, personally, without oversight, to wipe out 16 billion dollars of government services to veterans and the disabled and food safety etc etc

Crazy to me how years ago the “Amazon Key” that let drivers into your house to make deliveries was just “an April Fool’s joke” and now it’s an actual thing

USDA has announced this new bird flu spillover, but it hasn't posted the sequence & metadata. Researchers need that to determine around how long this went unnoticed -- and therefore uncontrolled.

“If the Trump administration and Musk’s operation unilaterally gut NOAA, this would be an illegal overreach of presidential authority that will be swiftly challenged in the courts."

The U.S. #NationalWeatherService, housed within #NOAA, is a truly world-class meteorological predictive service, perhaps singularly so. It costs only ~$3/yr per taxpayer, & yields ~10:1 return on investment--saving economy 10s-100s of billions, not to mention thousands of lives.

These Roads Aren’t Built for Wilder Weather Driven by Climate Change Important motorways across the world weren’t designed to withstand more extreme temperatures and rainfall.

Around 10 years ago I almost died because a road not built with climate change in mind was so wrecked it damaged the bus I was on. I knew that I would eventually write a story about how climate change is wrecking roads, and endangering lives. This is me trying to explain that. Gift lift.

BREAKING NEWS ALERT
EPA fires science advisers
01/28/2025 07:24 PM EST Acting EPA Administrator James Payne has ousted all members of two of the agency's most influential science advisory panels, giving President Donald Trump's
administration the opportunity to reshape them with its own appointees. In an obliquely worded email sent late Tuesday afternoon, Payne said a decision had been made to "reset" the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee and Science Advisory Board "to ensure that the agency receives scientific advice consistent with its legal
obligations to advance our core mission." EPA will seek nominations in the coming weeks, Payne added, with all members
encouraged to reapply.

I have a suggestion for you. In times of trouble and strife, there is therapeutic benefit in being among trees and in physical contact with them. So if you can, go hug a tree today, the bigger the better. This huge old chinkapin oak is known as The Great God Tree.

Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research.

I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.
