Anyway, what a whirlwind trip. I know that things have been so difficult and traumatic and the future is uncertain, but it felt nice to do something good for someone and to see a family reunited after so much suffering. On the drive home, he said he’d gotten taken in winter and now it was summer.

I have this op ed pinned to my office bulletin board. When I get discouraged, it (and by definition, her work) gives me motivation!
Just donated in honor of my friend Donna, who is an amazing quilter. Thanks for amplifying!
That's amazing
I read Dupré’s story linked in the thread, and something that stood out was how AI chatbots remove social friction, encouraging users to continue horrible thoughts and actions, isolating them further from real people who provide that friction. And “removing friction” really is the value prop of AI

Happening now at the Broadview, IL ICE facility: waiting for a press conference on the story of Sundas "Sunny" Naqvi, a US citizen who was reportedly detained by federal immigration agents at O'Hare Airport Thursday and ended up released from a detention facility in Wisconsin early Saturday morning.
Morrison emphasized that federal immigration agents lied, repeatedly changing their story about Naqvi and her colleagues' status. He added she was released to the street in Wisconsin and that as of right now, she still has not gotten her passport back.
The presser started moments ago. First speaker was Cook County Commissioner Kevin Morrison, a family friend of Naqvi's.
He gives a timeline of Naqvi's ordeal, saying he believes she and the others were moved from Broadview on Friday night after texts sent to her phone were read but not responed to.
Everyone should not have to have a direct line to elected officials in order to ensure that we are not kidnapped by the government.
FYI—we've watched Dodge County jail transport officers at Broadview before, this is a known connection point for ICE detainees:
Good morning and a hearty WTF.
Note: Morrison is a Cook Co commissioner.
This woman, US citizen living in Skokie, was detained at Ohare yesterday, taken to Broadview, then transferred to a detention facility in Wisconsin, now released. We know all this not because of DHS, who repeatedly denied that they even had her, but because her phone was pinging in those locations.
updates from cook county commissioner on a very weird and concerning situation in broadview
Wil Wheaton posted to his blog and I only just now got to reading it, (because…. waves at the general state of the world).
You might also really enjoy and appreciate his “story behind the story” of this photo:

I'm so sorry. Thinking of you today.
No policy in the world can justify scarring children the way we’re doing in the name of immigration reform, writes Heidi Stevens.
When you’re super racist, but you can’t really quite explain why.
Like 75% of the US Olympic curlers are from Minnesota. A lot of them curl out of two clubs in Saint Paul, one club is in Frogtown, a neighborhood that has been very heavily targeted by ICE. These curlers are good neighbors.
Goldman: You said references to ICE as secret police encourages threats. The problem is you have it backwards sir. People are making valid observations about your tactics which are outright fascist. If you don’t want to be called a fascist regime, stop acting like one.
I say this regularly. People use performative as a substitute for 'inauthentic' and we could all just say the words we mean to say. Erving Goffman helps us to understand that we perform all of the time in real life. Life itself is often a performance of self.
Most political performances don't accomplish anything this concrete btw. I applaud the people who've pulled this off.
Please don't accuse people in knitted hats of only wearing their supposed politics if all you're doing is posting, which is basically just another way of wearing your politics. It's a silly thing to attack people over in any case. Using fashion to signal support for ongoing acts of rebellion is good
This is a love song to what the Latino community brings to the US - protest in art in its purest form and its widely entertaining. Well done all the way around.
loved every second of Bad Bunny. That message of inclusion and a celebration of cultures like Puerto Rico’s is just what America needs right now. Plus, his music just gets you in motion. 10/10
