I would warn the SNP are great at overpromising and underdelivering. They dropped a slate of progressive legislation in the last year. One of their promises is to bring a Conversion Practices ban if the UK doesn't. Nicola Sturgeon promised the exact same 5 years ago.

In contrast, when the gay rights cause first got going, the ideal was toleration. Gays and lesbians should have freedom from aggression and discrimination, but other people didn't have to like it. Over time, though, the big idea became "cultural change", meaning bringing about a widespread morality shift; and suddenly, everybody did have to like it. The concern became influencing what went on inside people's heads and policing what they said out loud; and self-ID provided the perfect vehicle.
