This is what the half sphere and vertex colors looks like, incase that's helpful
Skybox has static clouds painted into it + large half-sphere mesh in the air with two scrolling cloud textures + noise to add subtle distortion. The halfsphere uses a vertex color mask to fade out the far edges and around the sun to blend the scrolling clouds into the skybox in the background
Tried adding some cracks below this ice, crazy what a difference it makes compared to the flat texture π§

Unfortunately making game textures in PS is kind of a lost art and sites like youtube are oversaturated with low effort tutorial slop geared toward graphic design. It's tricky to find resources but a good starting point is this archive of old GoldSrc skinning tutorials: the303.org/tutorials/go...

quick oldschool material test in photoshop in the vein of the goldsrc mod work i was doing in the mid 00s, just photoshop filters & basic round brush used, all mouse work.
250x150px & truecolour (though it looks nearly identical with a 256 colour palette as the HL1 engine would use)
