There's even a recipe for Blackbird Pie, which Laura said her family ate after they shot a bunch of birds eating their corn. I don't recommend it!
Some of it relates to the mentions of food in Laura Ingalls Wilder's books (using "saleterus" and eating wild game) as well as Laura's cousin Lena's experiences in restaurant work (Yankton, Dakota Territory, in 1880).
