We often ask who wins elections. But who decides to run? New @electoralstudies.bsky.social w/@mhayes.bsky.social: Multi-member districts ⬆️ Black candidate emergence—and political empowerment matters. We revisit assumptions about US electoral design and show who enters the pipeline—not just who wins.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve started as a Postdoctoral Researcher at @nuffieldcollege.bsky.social. I look forward to engaging on questions of gender, political behavior, and survey methods over the next year.

I may also have brought the Texas sky with me!

I had such a fun time speaking with @lizdavidbarrett.bsky.social on the KickBack podcast about the role that both voters and women officeholders can play in electoral accountability for corruption in Latin America. Thanks for having me on @kickbackgap.bsky.social!

Happen to see that the openly gay leader of the D66 party is likely to lead the new government in the Netherlands? Curious how citizens evaluate lesbian and gay party leaders? My latest co-authored article exploring this question is now online (and open access)!

Lesbian and gay party leaders receive lower leadership evaluations than straight leaders in the UK, and the effects are consistent across genders. Interesting yet discouraging findings in our BJPS paper. @josephfcozza.bsky.social @gdilandro.bsky.social Andrea Aldrich @utgovernment.bsky.social

BJPolS abstract focused on how citizens evaluate lesbian and gay leaders, particularly in political contexts, and its impact on leadership evaluations compared to straight counterparts.

So proud of @gdilandro.bsky.social for successfully defending his thesis "Political Parties and the Gender Voting Gap in Western Democracies: A Supply and Demand Framework." He's already published one dissertation paper in @bjpols.bsky.social & there's more great gender & politics work to come! 🍾

📰 Our research on the mental load is on CBS Mornings! 💥

In @jmfncfr.bsky.social, we find mothers manage 71% of family tasks—rising to 79% for daily routines. A powerful but often invisible form of inequality.

Grateful to team up with @leahruppanner.bsky.social on this work -- more to come!

I am incredibly proud that my book, co-authored with Andrea Aldrich, is published. Using an original party leadership dataset from 11 parliamentary democracies, Andrea and I show that women candidates face a glass ceiling for leadership and quickly sink once elected (the quicksand theory).

🥳We got page nrs!

🤓In this CPS article, Rosie Shorrocks and I test mechanisms that according to modernization theory can explain modern gender gaps.

🧐Our results imply that women with different political views select into different life trajectories - in education, work, out of marriage.

Electoral Gender Quotas and Democratic Legitimacy | American Political Science Review | Cambridge Core Electoral Gender Quotas and Democratic Legitimacy

I am honored & humbled working w/ Amanda Clayton & @dzobrien.bsky.social. Our latest @apsrjournal.bsky.social shows that gender quotas do *not* erode legitimacy: across democracies, voters prefer legislatures w/ gender balance to those w/ male dominance, full stop.

Really proud of @gdilandro.bsky.social, whose new BJPS article shows that increases in 🚺's labor force participation are associated w/ 🚺's support for the left—but only when left parties support gender-egalitarian labor market policies.
