We now get up to 14 Friends at our mid week meeting. A few years ago we sometimes had one or two. The increase demonstrates an increased demand for worship in these uncertain times. Join us at 1 to 1.30pm at the Friends Meeting House, St.Johns Street, Bury St.Edmunds, IP331SJ.

The arms trade is a root cause of human suffering, facilitating deadly conflict and the suppression of human rights around the world.
Quakers joined other peace campaigners in two days of protest to draw attention to the SDSC-UK arms fair hosted by Birmingham's NEC.

Laying of white poppy wreath
At the war memorial
White poppy weath
Very moving period of silent reflection including the laying of our white poppy wreath at Bury St.Edmunds war memorial. “Working for Peace requires us to remember with integrity”.
We are very pleased to be hosting @everycasualty.bsky.social on Sunday as part of Alternative Remembrance Sunday events. Their 'Virtual Cenotaph', projected onto Friends House from 5pm, will remember 100 lives lost to war in 2024. It will be a powerful, moving memorial quaker.org.uk/events/the-v...
Just a reminder: Join Bury St Edmunds Quakers at the Angel Hill War Memorial on Sunday 9 November at 2.30pm for a short act of remembrance to honour all victims of war and reflect on the need for peace. All very welcome.

A very moving video from Beyond Conflict, the global mental health charity for survivors of war, terrorism and displacement. Beyond Conflict believes that the mental health of every person matters. The charity aims to heal minds, change lives and restore hope.

The following quote is set in white letters against a colourful abstract background based on circle shapes: "All of our humanity is dependent upon recognizing the humanity in others."

Glenthorne Guest House
Frosty view from Glenthorne Guesthouse
We recently visited Glenthorne Guest House and Conference Centre in beautiful Grasmere. Run as a Quaker Charity but open to all. Glenthorne is a place where you would not feel alone if you come on your own. Very special atmosphere & stunning walks right from the door. 2026 programme now!
The image includes the quotation below on a light purple background with the "Daily Quaker Message" logo in the bottom right hand corner:Think how often injustice is related to inconsistency. Inconsistency has too often been the cradle of injustice and sociopathic behavior. So to speak of consistent compassion is to affirm the importance of a reliable and steady love for others, regardless of their station in life. Philip Gulley

The theme of Quaker Week this year is Love Your Neighbour.
Listen to this beautiful episode of the BBC’s Daily Service, delivered by @timquaker.bsky.social – a Quaker and general secretary of @globalquakers.bsky.social – which reflects on the meaning and importance of loving your neighbour.
Violence is never right. Killing is never right. Targeting people because of who they are is never right.
We give thanks for all those, from all backgrounds, who have come together to oppose hatred and promote living together peacefully. It is vital that we all continue to do so.
Find out more about Bury St.Edmunds during Quaker Week at our stall outside the Meeting House, St.Johns Street, IP33 1SJ 10-2 on Sunday, October 4th. All are very welcome. We are very F/friendly! For more information on Quaker Week nationally: www.quaker.org.uk/news-and-eve...
As tensions rise and divisions deepen across the UK and beyond, Quakers are inviting everyone to pause, reflect, and act on one simple but radical idea: Love Your Neighbour.

Steam engine on North Norfolk Railway
Saturday, 27th Sept marks the 200 anniversary of the of the Stockton & Darlington railway. Quakers played a major part in the development of railways. One reason for this involvement was the exclusion of Quakers from the professions hence the interest in business.
I liked this, from Quakers in Britain Recording Clerk, Paul Parker, considering 'Who is my neighbour'?

Ride and Stride participant
Plenty of cyclists and walkers visited our Meeting House during annual Rise and Stride event In aid of Churches Trust. Great outreach & a stark contrast with troubling events in London on the same day.
Positive story time!
“Refugees from across the world have been lending their gardening skills and their muscles to Quakers in South Cumbria, helping to create biodiverse friendship gardens for both wildlife and visitors to enjoy.”

Armed Forces Day Banner outside the Meeting Hpuse
Armed Forces Day is on Sat, 28th June. Quakers hold a Testimony to peace and all that makes for peace. We respect the courage of our armed forces & desire to do whatever may be possible to keep them from harm. We are concerned at the manner in which AFD is widely presented as family entertainment.
