RIP HAMPSHIRE COLLEGE
although i was eventually deemed "a negative influence on campus life," hampshire was the first place i ever felt as though i wasn't from an entirely different planet. studying video art, kitsch & the arcology of paolo soleri did my soul good.

it may still stay up for a while, not sure. but i've been loading new stuff every friday & that will stop at the end of the month.
down to the last active weeks selling Steve Albini's rec, bks, posters, etc. 1 year. preceded by 3 months of organizing. an interesting, all-consuming way to spend 15 months. there's still lotsa great/oddball stuff left & an auction for nirvana's gold disc. check it out

napoleon murphy brock was the last straw for me zappa-wise. so i file "bongo fury" under beefheart & otherwise dial it back to "grand wazoo"

yeah, i also miss the way time used to move
ha. there is one good part. it's about clothespins. but that trip to the colours fest is something of a blur. nyoukis certainly knows how to throw a wing ding of a gathering.
i'm sure yr right. i know almost nothing about current music writing, but will take yr word on bob. just was surprised the times deigned to give the band that much space & detailed coverage. the whole time the band existed i had to fight editors (even at the l.a. weekly) to give them decent coverage
my wife & i were in l.a. 81-84. i was writing a lot & working at sst as well, so we saw them all the time. one of the few bands who played so often we couldn't get to nearly as many shows as we'd've liked to, even though we went out 4-5 nights a week. d & watt were like a commie laurel & hatrdy

RIP AUGIE MEYERS
although his organ tone was abused by lots of less talented musicians, the sound he created for "she's about a mover" with the sir douglas quintet was always classic when it came out of augie's own vox.

is the correct answer, "seven"?
nice nyt overview of paul thomas anderson's films, reminds me how much i love this guy's work. sadly, they don't mention the huge influence robert downey sr. had on thomas's style, but you can watch every one of his features in less than 24 hours. do it!

jello biafra has a stroke? dang. he has never been my favorite singer, but i did vote for him for sf mayor back in '79, and he has championed some fine music over the years. so let us wish him a speedy recovery.

rec of the day: PHIL MISTEIN a.o. "The Velvet Underground at the Boston Tea Party" (SP Purple Dog hc) big nice book of pics from each of the 5 runs the VU did at the tea party. great essays but mostly pix -- all by "the modern printer." not sure of press contact info, but it's out there somewhere.
rec of the day: CHRIS D The Humanity of Femmes Fatales and Heartless Villains – International Noir and Beyond Genre (poison fang tpb)
incredible 800+ page book dealing with seemingly every-noir-based film ever made. an insanely sprawling and readable masterpiece.
