Of *course* this is a good idea, despite being in a seismically active country, to have a 2km tailings dam right above the Clutha river

AMAZING!!! @christchurchlib.bsky.social councillors voted 12 to 1 to end discharging wastewater into Akaroa Harbour, to right a cultural wrong and to protect the blue tourism environment & economy by discharging very highly treated water to trees/land & not an ‘out of sight out of mind’ ocean option

Funding falls short as father tries to get a lift for his disabled daughter Dinson Thomas said he carries his 13-year-old daughter, who has cerebral palsy, up several steps to get into their house.

"For some people just paying for it is their solution but not everyone can do that so it is an equity issue. It's not fair that some are asked to pay and others just wait and wait." - Laurie Hilsgen, Carers NZ chief executive

The hidden power keeping wages low For decades, economists gave short shrift to the idea of monopsony — a power employers can have to suppress wages. Now a wave of research suggests it's everywhere, and a new book argues it's key to understanding today's inequality.

Sorry but a lot of us have been here since this was just one big disaster queer house party and that's still how we exist here. This isn't high school speech and debate club. "Are you going to respond to my arguments?" Bitch, no. I'm hanging with my mates and we are goofing off and having fun.

After Jay Hulme

from 'Folkish' by Kym Deyn

She spent her last years aflame, tired behind the eyes, palms bowls of ash. Radiance had her skin so frail it glowed through. Light was killing her slow.

Rain steamed over her and she worked harder for it. Build that abbey, write those letters, let tansy grow tall in the beds. She shone in her lone hours, tried to bid it away, unafraid at her age, but the inconvenience of it, a thirst, she flaked upwards like old paint. Her feet stopped touching the floor so she let her robes out. Pretended she wasn't the awkwardness of it, the fuss she'd rather have left like a tomcat evaporating into the night, but the angels, the bells, her light - a pendulum's upward swing.

you could become a battlecry slung over the lawns

I'm saying the screaming doesn't have to stop only start sure, consequences that old chestnut but there's nothing stopping you not really no bind no gag only this little veneer of civility I know a gal that liked to scream on top of neolithic tombs I kid but you could sitting in you thorned and roiling for nothing here

just letting go into a sharp november wind

she could kill ya

her shriek the pitch to split a man's head like a pomelo

open up this shuttered chest

all your rage

carried like a weekend bag

your big stupid head carrying your big stupid neuroses

in bouquets like tulips

if it were up to me I'd do tours

into a field

this spot where you are now

let go

you know you blew it

The Policing Amendment Bill vastly expands Police surveillance powers and enables the use of body cams without any additional oversight. It also allows Police to designate no-go areas nearly anywhere and on the flimsiest of grounds.

this is such an interesting observation, especially when you put it in the context of how gaming has employed a similar approach to keeping casual players engaged - removing variance and feels bads, using skill based matchmaking etc to prioritize retention

First you go to a cute walk with your wife by the river and see some funny duck, and next thing you know 2 weeks later you're taking an online ornithology class and birding in the sleet beside 12 people who woke up at 6 AM to stand in the middle of a swamp to see a weird bird with a long neck.

There are no words that adequately describe how much I miss being able to go line dancing, to festivals, spending hours a day at two gyms, power walking, and just having a basic normal social life.

Long Covid took all that from me, and it could take it from anyone.
