I remember cringing before a Board member when I was staff for an esteemed writers conference when she insisted, without malice - just ignorance, that writers should be willing to pay the (too high for me) fees because we all "need to invest in our work."

100%. And again, most of us cannot even imagine what that entails—because the system is built so we can’t!! When I tell you that I had to do “parking duty” and greet the families in the morning—only to see cars with doors that opened UP for the first and only time irl. That’s just one example

I still haven’t been to a writers’ conference because of the fees (the last one I checked out was about $350, which is incredible…)
