A strange awful feeling, sitting at a departure gate at Heathrow getting ready for an exciting trip, yet shakin with impotent rage at Israel's murderous bombing of Lebanon, seeing places I know in Beirut turned to rubble and columns of smoke. Absolute bastards.

Israel called today's operations in Lebanon ETERNAL DARKNESS and we are still being told that this fascist nation can be reasoned with.
This is just a fact: either Israel is stopped or expect the war to continue and expand. Those are the options.
Or strike out for more hopeful horizons?

May we always be at an age to enjoy the wonders of garden woodpeckers, and all the other birds!
PS Let me know if you want to read my recent journal article about Emily Shackleton's diary...
So much this.
"She waited patiently for his return" – I have read nothing about this explorer's wife and cannot credit her with having an interior life of her own.
It's such a lovely thing. And I forget about it every year so it's always a surprise!
Happy @alcs.co.uk day to all every writer who only just realised they have to sign into their accounts to see their statement, and spent yesterday feeling sad they didn't get an email, but have just discovered they DID get some free money after all! 🎉🎊🥂
Stay inside and watch this instead, my favourite live version of it: youtu.be/Tihj-HbRx-Y?...
This looks fantastic!
Congratulations Sarah - your chapter looks great!

I used to walk past this when we lived in Beirut. It's in a heavily residential area, with the British Council & Goethe Institute nearby - even the shop where we bought our sofa. Just the same banal everyday stuff as any city. The Israeli government and IDF are fucking sociopaths.
My latest for @972mag.com on how Israel’s war is against Lebanon.
Not Hezbollah. Lebanon.

Great thread. I regularly go past the spot on the river in Bristol where the Inuit gave their demonstration of hunting in kayak on my way to the office, and often think of them.
A beautiful thread that serves to remind that we we can claim the fellowship of the people of both the past and the present.
Today, we're publishing Don't Steal This Book - a (mostly) empty book from almost 10,000 authors, protesting the theft of their work by AI companies.

I read an interview with Self Esteem a few months about how all her amazing successes in her career meant that she was recently able to finally put down a deposit on 'a small flat'. Showbiz apparently doesn't pay like it used to.

I should add that the LP 'India for Indian Travellers' series was amazing. Guidebooks to Bollywood film locations, hill stations etc. So much insight and lots of fun - a shame they're no longer in print.

Great Britain for the Indian Traveller: Lonely Planet Unlike many countries, Great Britain doesnt fall into the category of mysterious and exotic. And thats a good thing, especially for the tourist. You are bound to have an opinion of Britain before youve even been here, based on something youve seen, read or heard. This is the land of Shakespeare and Sherlock Holmes, and who could be unfamiliar with the quintessentially British spy James Bond or the evergreen tunes of The Beatles? From the graceful architecture of Bath in the south to the soaring ramparts of Edinburgh Castle in the north, via the mountains of Wales or the Roman ruins of Hadrians Wall, Britains astounding variety is a major reason to travel here. This travel guide includes: 23 colour maps The top 12 British experiences and sights for those who dont want to miss out Detailed itineraries to discover the best of Great Britain in 2 weeks Comprehensive information on the beautiful countryside of the Lake District, Shakespeares birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon, the historical gems of Stonehenge and Bath and the seaside in Cornwall Ideas for travelling with kids with theme park listings including Madame Tussauds, the London Dungeon and other great attractions for the entire family Detailed sections on Wales and Scotland
Lonely Planet ince produced an amazing series of guidebooks for Indian travellers - it was fascinating to see Indian travel writers turn the lens on the UK. Not exotic, but strong on Shakespeare, James Bond and the evergreen tunes of The Beatles, apparently.
It's almost like they tested this all on Palestine, the world did nothing, and they took that as permission to expand. Just like everyone who was paying attention said they would.

The IDF just ordered the *entirety of south Lebanon* to be forcibly displaced.
They are emptying the land of its population, creating a massive crisis, and will now proceed to further annihilate large parts of Lebanon.
The very nation state of Lebanon is being destroyed.
The flipside of this isnthst when you do get a legit email, it now takes so long to due diligence to work out that the editor or whoever os actually really. I nearly binned something last week because I initially thought it was spam.
One day I'll have to tell my zombie story. Every other person you meet in Haiti seems to know someone who's encountered a zombie. But always at one remove! Good folk stories but (like Vodou) a strong belief in their reality, even among evangelicals. So interesting.
