Opinion | Why We Couldn’t Sell America on U.S.A.I.D.

“I worked for U.S.A.I.D. in East Africa over the past eight and a half years, selling the story of American foreign aid to people in Rwanda, Ethiopia and Kenya. Our inability to tell this same story to Americans is our great failure.” www.nytimes.com/2025/06/29/o...

This is actually the reason "thinking machines" were banned in the Dune universe.

"Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them."

The next Fast & Furious movie is going to go back to their first one, where they're stealing DVD players off of trucks.

I'm serious about pushing Republicans on impeachment this week. Think about it. There will never be a better chance. Rich people losing their wealth is the *only* thing that can move the needle on this. Not fascism, not racism, not the destruction of public health. This is it.

It should be noted that markets have underreacted to the tariffs. A 30–50% sales tax (aka tariffs),
will wipe out entire industries.

The -7% drop this week doesn’t reflect the full damage. It’s an optimistic move assuming the tariffs won’t stick. The impact, if enforced, would be far more severe.

Trump is imposing a 10% tariff on the Heard and McDonald Islands.

The Heard and McDonald Islands are uninhabited.

If we were conquered and under hostile occupation, what would the government do differently? Would an occupation government that wanted to crush the United States as a vibrant, prosperous country with influence around the world do anything differently?

The Defense Secretary and several others need to resign and face charges. Every member of Congress should demand it. Nothing less is acceptable.

Also, all federal employees, to include FBI special agents, need to remember their oath is to the Constitution, not the president or a cabinet secretary.

Democrats should send people to each one of these towns and hold their own town halls. Send Pete Buttigieg on a speaking tour.

The former CEO of American Express, Ken Chenault, spoke at the 2024 DNC and talked about how businesses depend on stability and the rule of law.

Was overshadowed at the time but seems prophetic now.

New via NYT — The CIA sent the White House an unclassified email listing all employees hired by the spy agency over the last two years to comply with an executive order to shrink the federal work force. One former agency officer called the reporting of names a “counterintelligence disaster.”

“On Friday, February 7, 2025, at 11:59 pm (EST) all USAID direct hire personnel will be placed on administrative leave globally, with the exception of designated personnel responsible for mission-critical functions, core leadership and specially designated programs. Essential personnel expected to continue working will be informed by Agency leadership by Thursday, February 6, at 3:00pm (EST).

For USAID personnel currently posted outside the United States, the Agency, in coordination with missions and the Department of State, is currently preparing a plan, in accordance with all applicable requirements and laws, under which the Agency would arrange and pay for return travel to the United States within 30 days and provide for the termination of PSC and ISC contracts that are not determined to be essential. The Agency will consider case-by-case exceptions and return travel extensions based on personal or family hardship, mobility or safety concerns, or other reasons. For example, the Agency will consider exceptions based on the timing of dependents’ school term, personal or familial medical needs, pregnancy, and other reasons. Further guidance on how to request an exception will be forthcoming.

Thank you for your service”

USAID’s website has been deleted, all that is left is a note saying all personnel are now on administrative leave and personnel outside the US are to be brought home. Completely illegal, no act of congress or even executive order was signed to dismantle the agency
