**Throwback Thursday**

We’re kicking things off with our next episode of The Members Room, recorded on Wednesday 25th February at 8pm GMT / 3pm ET. If you’re new, The Members Room is our exclusive Who discussion show recorded live on Zoom — you can watch live, join the chat, or catch the replay on Patreon afterwards. Episodes run roughly two hours and are split into two parts for easier viewing. Joining me this time: Ethan Fisher (Fisher Protocol), Jason Gifford (Who collector extraordinaire), and Dante DiCarlo (Who author and guitarist in Who’s Next). Check your emails or Patreon for the Zoom link

We’ll also be releasing our next ‘60th Anniversary Special’ on 4th March, focusing on The Who’s fourth single, ‘Substitute’ — a strong contender for greatest 60s single of all time. Bets Crockett and I had a LOT to say about this one, and it may even arrive as a two-parter. Expect plenty of talk about court cases, injunctions, settlements… and of course, B-sides

To become a TATW Member and have access to a bunch of bonus content costs just £3 or $4 a month — click the post link to sign up

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to include The Who’s debut single as part of our ‘60th Anniversary Special’ series of episodes (which are exclusive to our Talking About The Who Members via Patreon), but we did do a feature on the song during our Season One episode with Keith Moon biographer Tony Fletcher a year ago today

If you haven’t heard the episode, you can find it by searching for ‘Talking About The Who’ in your favourite podcast app. There’s also a video extract of the episode on our YouTube channel, in which Tony talks about writing his Keith Moon biography and the effect it had on him

“Imagine releasing your first album and you’re going up against The Beatles”

We’re celebrating the 60th anniversary of the UK release of The Who’s debut album, My Generation, on this day in 1965 with a two-part ‘60th Anniversary Special’ episode, available exclusively to our Talking About The Who Members, alongside a video extract on our YouTube channel

Paul Bearman is joined by Bets Crockett and Dante DiCarlo to discuss each song and also look at how the album represented both a starting point and a full stop for the band; the differences between the UK and US versions; the ongoing clash of Roger Daltrey’s R&B leanings with Pete Townshend’s pop sensibilities; the album being released on the same day as Rubber Soul; the throughline from ‘The Kids Are Alright’ to Quadrophenia; the original plan for an album consisting mostly of covers, and why certain songs were chosen over others; the band talking negatively about My Generation in print; Nicky Hopkins’ essential contribution to the album; missing parts on subsequent reissues; and how Anya Butler is an unsung hero of Who history

One year ago today, the first episode of ‘Talking About The Who’ was released.

(…although I did schedule it to be released at midnight in the UK, so it would’ve been 19th November in America…whoops!...)

It’s been quite a year, let me tell you. A heartfelt thankyou to all of you for listening over the past 12 months and giving such positive feedback.

When I started this whole venture, I could never have imagined how lucky I’d be with the special guests I’d have on the podcast during the first year: Jody Linscott; Chris Charlesworth; Irish Jack; Mr Boulder; Tony Fletcher; Ethan Fisher and Bets Crockett; Matt Kent; Mandy Moon; Andy Neill; Dante DiCarlo; Dan Epstein; Buddy Ascott; Richard Evans; and Colin Dawson. I’m incredibly grateful to all of them for not only agreeing to be on the podcast, but for the help, support and encouragement they’ve all given me, too.

I have to say an extra big thankyou to our Members, all of whom are doing their bit to support the podcast and keep it going. Also, a special mention must go to the wonderful human beings who’ve helped me create bonus content for our Members, namely our ‘60th Anniversary Special’ episodes and our Who-discussion show, ‘The Members Room’: Bets Crockett; Matt Weston; Jason Gifford; Dante DiCarlo; Ethan Fisher; and Dan Epstein.

All being well, 2026 will see the release of Season Three…AND Season Four. There’ll be more YouTube videos, along with more bonus content for our Members. And I’m planning to start work on another Who-related project sometime next year, too, but more on that later.

I now invite you to celebrate our first birthday in any way you see fit.

Until next time – and as Roger Daltrey always says – “Be lucky!”

Paul

Apparently, it was Entwistle who rejected this mix on behalf of the whole band because he didn’t like the bass sound

“How do you write your epitaph at 19 years old?”

We’re celebrating the 60th anniversary of the UK release of The Who’s third single, ‘My Generation’, on this day in 1965 in our latest 60th Anniversary Special episode, available exclusively to our Talking About The Who Members, alongside a video extract of the episode on YouTube

Paul Bearman and Bets Crockett look at the impact of writing the words, “I hope I die before I get old”; The Who’s new status as the most exciting live act in the UK at this time; Pete Townshend moving to Belgravia at Kit Lambert’s insistence and becoming inspired to write the song; how the song permeated through The Who's later material; the lead-up to the infamous Aarhus show and Roger Daltrey’s firing from the band; Pete’s drunken encounter with Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols in 1977; John Entwistle’s iconic bass solo; and how The Who dealt with ‘My Generation’ being an albatross around their necks

To become a TATW Member for just £3 or $3 a month and hear the full episode — as well as all our other bonus content — click on the Patreon link below

Hello, Paul here.

Just dropping in to let you all know that tomorrow sees the release of the final episode of Season Two, featuring Colin Dawson of The Detours as our special guest. As always, it will be available on all good podcast apps, as well as a short video extract of the interview being available on YouTube. And if you’re a TATW Member, you’ll have the ad-free version of the episode, plus a bonus episode featuring more of my conversation with Colin.

In the meantime, I thought I’d share this photo that my mum recently discovered and sent me. This is me, five years old, holding my copy of ‘The Who – Rarities Volume 1’, which I still own, and which remains one of my favourite Who compilations (along with Volume 2!).

Maybe I need to recreate this picture as the 45-year-old that I am now?
