Years of perseverance have succeeded in the reissue of works by Agnes Owens, one of Scotland’s most original but unrecognised authors
Great opportunity for writing classes from writer of the terrific book Scabby Queen, Kristin Innes. This legacy of Owens from talks with Sorcha Dallas, like when she first attended creative writing classes in the late seventies at Alexandria Centre, with Gray, Kelman and Lochead. Well done to all.

Alas, Agnes Owens never had a Paris Review interview. However, this one comes pretty close.

Agnes Owens’ fiction is rooted in place—Milngavie, the Vale of Leven, the Highlands. Yet many stories are set nowhere specific. By stripping place to its essentials, Owens transforms local experience into something universal—making private endurance speak to collective conditions.
#CurrentlyReading (via library ebook at max magnification) the new to me (and sadly OOP) collected stories and novellas of Agnes Owens. Thankfully, Birlinn is in train reprinting her wee but perfectly formed backlist to mark her centennial year.

Terrific article , never knew such a folk festival on my doorstep. Agnes Owens , the Scottish author squatted in a derelict building with her husband Sam and gave birth to her son Bil back in 1950.

We've lost the great Allan Massie. An absolute giant of Scottish literature and journalism, and an inspirational, kind and generous man, too. I think his son @alexmassie.bsky.social is only sporadically on Bluesky, but he has written a beautiful obituary. alexmassie.substack.com/p/allan-mass...
