After DOGE-ordered hiring freeze, Utah’s largest military installation is losing child care Dozens of Utah families are searching for new child care options after a facility on Hill Air Force Base closed last week.

Approximately 31 families’ children no longer have a spot in a care facility on the Davis County base. The shuttering of one of two child development centers was triggered in part by a civilian hiring freeze for the Defense Department.

Triple daily rent is a mandatory judgment in Utah. Lawmakers voted against making it optional. Under Utah law, judges must grant treble damages as long as a landlord can prove the amount owed by a tenant.

Nick Lloyd, a landlord attorney who works with Kirk Cullimore Sr., spoke against the bill.

“If you can’t pay your rent, you should move on,” he told the committee.

Kirk Cullimore Jr. — Utah’s Senate majority leader — voted against the bill.
