Matt Walsh tweet: Bizarre decision by the NFL to have some guy come out and lethargically mumble a bunch of songs that 90 percent of the NFL audience has never heard
they can take over the entire country but they can never actually be cool and it will eat at them forever

I feel like the Super Bowl Halftime Show has become an excellent litmus test on proximity and adherence to white supremacy.

I’m down to the last 70ish pages of Sally Rooney’s Intermezzo and I don’t know if I can stand it.
She writes relational tension better than just about anyone!

very excited to see what happens when you make a deeply compromised addict the leader of the department of defense and subordinate to a madman

Just so we’re clear:
1. Audiobooks count
2. Reading is political
3. The orange man is a piece of 💩
Thanks for stopping by 💃

My review for any of his books is always exactly the same:
“I’m just a man standing in front of Jonathan Haidt *begging* him to do some basic systemic analysis.”

Is it possible that basing school funding on test scores, doing less than nothing about school shootings, threatening teachers for respecting their students’ identities, and generally not giving a flying fuck about safety in a global pandemic could cause anxiety just as much as the damn screens?

I always feel so gaslit when books I didn’t like win Goodreads awards.
I’m blaming Jeff Bezos.

I’m still not sure who put this canvas up in our church nursery above the changing table, but I want to give them the highest of fives.

Thanks to the latest @fortresspress.bsky.social sale, I’ve got the completed DBWE!
Everyone around the office is humoring me, but I’m excited for it and that’s all that matters 😂

Top 3 all-time for me. Read it in a Novels class in high school and it blew things wide open for me.

White people, it’s not enough to not be racist. Y’all need to HATE racism like Kendrick Lamar hates Drake. Commit to the goddamned bit.

incredible that he's deriding it in the same post he self-censors its name because he knows the Vichy Twitter algorithm buries any mention of or links to its competitors

Maggie Nelson is so good! Argonauts and Bluets are frequent re-reads for me.

Y’all! Run, don’t walk to get this book if you haven’t read it yet.
It’s on my Mount Rushmore of greatest novels.
You won’t regret it!

Agreed! I was actually surprised at how much I loved Ghostroots too. If you have the chance, and are into Nigerian ghost stories, it’s a great collection.
I hope your martyr! hold comes in soon. It was the closest to James for that kind of award-worthiness, imo.

Favorite thing I've read about the new Bonhoeffer film coming out this weekend: “This film’s relationship to the historical Bonhoeffer is the relationship of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter to the historical Lincoln.”

I’m already stressing about the number of times I’ll have to talk with parishioners about Er*c Metax*s over the next couple weeks.
I bought extra copies of Life Together so at least I’ll be prepared to hand them something better on the way out 😬

It was another great season of reading and being introduced to new authors and diverse perspectives, which is truly my favorite part of National Book season.
What are your favorite books of the year? What’s next on your TBR?

Fiction - Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar — it’s down to this one and James by Percival Everett. Both were among the best I’ve read all year. And both are deserving. Martyr! gets my pick because it’s the one I’m most excited to re-read.
