Also, I was reminded today that about a month before the pandemic began I made the case that 15,000 eviction filings/year was "no glimmer of positive news."
There were over 25,000 evictions filed last year.

Goal should not be to maintain imagined "normal" rate of eviction filings. Goal should be to prevent homelessness (for moral & cost-effective reasons).
We should strive for as close to zero nonpayment eviction filings as possible, with:
-Low-barrier ERA $
-Court diversions
-Tenant-friendly policies
Mpls CMs who dispute relevance of eviction filing comparisons, please explain what an appropriate # of eviction filings for your ward & city is per day/week/month.
What is a "normal" amount of threatened displacement?
Because each eviction filing is anything but "normal" for impacted households.
Looks like @repfreiberg.bsky.social is playing legislative Whac-A-Mole.

I nearly tripped over the stump while running this morning.
And a few blocks earlier someone pulled an illegal U-turn and nearly ran me over because they weren't expecting a runner crossing the street.
Sidewalk entirely covered in leaves and at least one stump.
When the snow isn't deep enough to cause an inconvenience for pedestrians when left unshoveled, some folks in North Minneapolis get creative.
Not the same thing, but there's a bill at the MN Legislature that would allow lease terminations upon loss of income:
www.revisor.mn.gov/bills/94/202...
Yesterday MPHA & affiliated nonprofit Community Housing Resources filed a combined 48 evictions. These alone represent 85% of Hennepin County filings & 57% of all statewide filings on 4/14/26.
Average of alleged overdue rent amounts: $628.
81% of the cases allege less than $1,000 in overdue rent.
Since 2021 thereβs been a general, ambiguous campaign of scorn against the Minneapolis city council as an institution. Meanwhile the Mayors power has increased while council power has decreased. Ambiguous attacks on the council distract from the fact that THIS MAYOR BEEN IN CHARGE
FOR OVER 8 YEARS.
Eric Roper also apparently believes the effort to prevent evictions is a topic unworthy of passionate debate.
Sorry Eric, they don't serve popcorn at Hennepin County Housing Court, so you'll have to bring your own as a distraction, while you observe people have one of the worst days of their lives.
Hell yeah @jedgarw.bsky.social πβ
FWIW, M2M tenancies very common here (many term leases default to M2M) & MN regulates (504B.135, 504B.147).
Also, MN already has tons of units with Just Cause protections: certain HUD/USDA subsidized units, LIHTC units, manufactured housing (327C.09), units covered by Brooklyn Center's ordinance.
Oh by the way, happy Fair Housing Month π
Q1 '26 eviction filings data/analysis at link below.
March saw sharp increases in many communities, in part attributable to waning mutual aid efforts.
Ultimately this boils down to: how many eviction filings are acceptable to us? It's cheaper to prevent homelessness.

A bill in front of the Minnesota Legislature aims to keep manufactured housing affordable, but park owners say the approach has problems. This comes as mobile home park residents say out-of-state park owners are pricing them out of their homes.
Almost every comment by Republican State Legislators in this article will make you cringe. They live in an alternate reality.

Told myself in advance I wasn't going to race the Ron Daws 25K today.
Nonprofit landlords who opposed temporary pre-eviction notice extensions are contributing to increased eviction filings in Hennepin County: Aeon & Alliance Limited Partnership (LP associated w/ Aeon) each filed 5 evictions yesterday.
Appears they're responsible for ~41 filings in just March alone.

In other, better news: today I am 1,400 days sober and also for some dumb reason have a 1,400-day run streak.

Sorry, forgot the alt text:
Excerpt from article:
The Minnesota Multi Housing Association, which represents landlords, disputes that there is a crisis, saying its members report that rent collection has been stable despite the recent chaos.
Lastly, MN Multi Housing Assoc. doesn't represent all landlords, just their paying members & vendors. Guess what? Mutual aid has been paying their members rents.
Meanwhile, Strib gathers no comments/reactions from anyone involved in mutual aid? That is reason evictions are not skyrocketing!

Filings would be significantly higher without mutual aid efforts. As those funds have decreased, filings are approaching & surpassing 2025 record trends.
We're all trying to prevent evictions from being filed in the first place! Using only eviction filing #'s to legislate on this is misguided.
5/
Historical comparisons are not perfect:
Comparing filings to 2025 influenced by record high filings that year.
Comparing historic January filings influenced by 1/1/2024 effective date of statewide 14-day pre-eviction notice lawβthere was a MASSIVE drop because pre-eviction notice laws work!
4/
Here's updated data:
At end of Jan, statewide filings 9% below 2025 trends.
As of 3/24: 5,950 eviction filings statewide.
At this time last year: 5,963 filings
Compared to last year, 0.2% lower. Compared to '23-'25 average at this time, filings are 9.3% higher.
Mutual aid has been working!
3/
Authors couldn't be bothered to include more recent eviction filing data than January. Previously, Strib reporters corrected their January reporting because they did not account for expungements with court data.
And evictions can be filed 24/7βso eviction #'s only from January are not helpful.
2/
Strib has a dedicated housing reporter, but apparently only to cover housing topics for wealthy people.
Strib leadership doesn't take this story seriously, yet they send out Breaking News alert yesterday to manufacture outrage with "Chaos Erupts" tiff among Mpls CMs.
Here's a few problems:

To be very clear, here are the CMs who tanked Pause Evictions, Save Lives. Forgive my lack of highlighting skills.

Notable article says council will document what MN's "experienced" during operation.
Many are still experiencing housing instability.
Also, executive order doesn't directly identify housing instability as an issue. Evictions cause more than economic harm.
