Wetlands are vital for #biodiversity, including as critical habitats for many migratory species.🐦🌍🧪

— @ipbes.bsky.social #LandDegradation Assessment

Yet, many of these #wetlands are now threatened.

Learn how wetlands support biodiversity with Ramsar for #WWD2025:

A stunning close-up of a Bearded Tit perched delicately on a swaying reed, its warm russet and soft grey plumage blending beautifully with the golden tones of the surrounding reeds. Its striking black ‘moustache’ contrasts sharply against its pale face, and its tiny claws grip the stem with ease. A second Bearded Tit flutters into frame, wings blurred in motion, adding a sense of movement.

Coastal wetlands of #GreatLakes come in all shapes and sizes, but the one thing they share in common is how important they are!

They're kind of like the rainforests of the #GreatLakes - lots of biodiversity and productivity, and also facing threats from development #WorldWetlandsDay

Black bird with vivid yellow chest and head is perched on a brown cattail stem. The bird's head is thrown back as it calls. There is a second similar bird in the background, out of focus: a neighbour declaring its territory.

Happy #WorldWetlandsDay to all who celebrate. Wetlands help reduce climate change impacts, they sustain the water we drink, and they support an amazing diversity of wildlife. In short: wetlands rock 🌿

NEW ANALYSIS:

China added enough clean energy in 2024 to power Germany (500TWh)

That halted rise of emissions for most of 2024 – but did not cut CO2

China could add enough clean GW in 2025 to power 2xUK (600TWh)

Critically, she also highlights #adaptation.

"Given the increasing frequency & severity of climate shocks, adaptation has become a top priority...This year, countries must finalize their national adaptation plans, specifying the private and public investment required to realize them."

20-25 years ago, it was received wisdom that wind and solar could only supply 10-20% of the grid without chaos. Today, grids handle 50%+ renewables and aim for 100%! The renewable #energy revolution is real—cleaner, cheaper, and unstoppable. 🌍⚡

I had to read & re-read it because it seemed that could not possibly be their plan. I know DEFRA have been making noises about it being unaffordable to bring every river up to scratch so they were going to focus on flagship rivers but who could have imagined they intended to create sacrifice rivers?

Protection deal for Amazon rainforest in peril as big business turns up heat Exclusive: With Brazil’s politicians, agribusiness organisations and global traders piling on the pressure, the highly successful 2006 Soy Moratorium is under threat

We can't afford to take backwards steps. ❌

Soy producers must uphold the Amazon Soy Moratorium & protect the rainforest from irreversible damage. Weakening it could open up large areas of forest for animal feed. 🌎
