“In the Americas, human rights are under pressure. There is evidence of an increase in authoritarian practices, repression of protests, and laws that limit civil organizations,” @anaamancay.bsky.social

The decision not to grant unconditional freedom to the Venezuelan journalist Carlos Julio Rojas is a direct attack on freedom of expression
We demand of the Venezuelan State the immediate cessation of judicial persecution and his full freedom

🧵We are confronting the most challenging moment of our age. Humanity is under attack from transnational anti-rights movements and predatory governments determined to assert their dominance through unlawful wars and brazen economic blackmail.

Takeaways from #Brazil
📉Poverty decreased
🌀Weather events disproportionately affected Black and low-income people
📜Environmental legislation was weakened, putting communities at risk
⚠️Violence against human rights defenders intensified
👮Police violence persisted
This is a direct assault on the foundations of human rights and the international rules-based order by the most powerful actors for the purpose of control, impunity and profit.
For the sake of humanity, the time to make history is now.

What marks this moment as fundamentally different is that we’re no longer documenting erosion around the system’s edges.

The Venezuelan government’s long-standing policy of repression to silence any form of real or perceived dissent has continuously used politically motivated arbitrary detentions to persecute people in Venezuela.
Despite the implementation of an Amnesty law in February 2026, and the release of numerous political prisoners as a result, many have had their applications rejected or have since had their status changed.

🧵#Venezuela: At least 485 individuals remain arbitrarily detained for political reasons.
Amnesty International calls on Delcy Rodríguez to release all those arbitrarily detained, to drop the charges against them and protect their lives, safety, and fair trial guarantees while detained
The ASEIMPOME have been under continuous threat for decades, we urge the National Lands Agency (ANT) to visit the area and guarantee Aseinpome’s land and territorial rights
🧵#Colombia: On the 14th of March, violent individuals destroyed a billboard installed by the ASEIMPOME indigenous community, to mark the existence of a formally recognised reserve. Armed men also intimidated an individual from the community.

They must provide guarantees that World Cup events, venues and gatherings will not be targeted for immigration enforcement.
Amnesty calls on FIFA to exercise its leverage to ensure the US ends these indiscriminate raids, ethnic profiling, arbitrary arrests, mass detention and unlawful deportations and dismantle the detention and deportation machine.
Those detained by ICE and CBP also risk being detained in conditions that amount to torture - even in relative proximity to FIFA's US headquarters in Florida.
Amnesty recently warned that the starkest threat to human rights in the US, during the FIFA World Cup, came from the cruel immigration enforcement conducted by ICE and CBP (and others) who have conducted arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances and extrajudicial executions
🧵Senior management in FIFA reportedly want Gianni Infantino to formally request the US President to halt all Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids for the length of the football tournament.
The fact that they haven't done so already is alarming!
New reports coming out.

We don’t know why visas were denied, but the denials could be very convenient for FIFA who want to look the other way when it comes to its links to violations of Palestinian’s rights.
Fifa decided it would “take no action” over this, resolving that “the final legal status of the West Bank remains an unresolved and highly complex matter under public international law”, which is an attempt to blur international law.

Amnesty International calls on FIFA and UEFA to suspend Israeli Football Association until it excludes clubs based in illegal settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT) from continuing to play in Israel’s football leagues

FIFA’s refusal to take action against clubs based in Israeli settlements, FIFA has failed to enforce its own rules and is blatantly flouting international law.

Truth, justice, reparations and guarantees of non-repetition. That’s what the victims are entitled to. This can only be a first step.
It has been 6 months since the attempted assassination of @yendrive.bsky.social and Luis Peche in Bogotá, and impunity continues.
We demand that #Colombia and #Venezuela act against transnational repression.
It is primarily the FAs that need to act, as members of FIFA. If they don’t, pressure will be put on the players. The FAs don’t like that, because they want them to focus on the football. It should be an incentive for them to act.
That’s a fair summary. The problem is it doesn’t negatively impact FIFA as much as it does athletes, supporters, workers and local communities who have had no say in the matter.
