Will collaborative editing in Posit ever work again? 😭😭😭

It seems like data-mining students is going to be the new thing in higher ed....
Proponents point towards better ability to predict retention and discover failing students. But is student wellbeing/failing really an issue that can be fixed with data? I don't think so.
What's the real goal?
I asked Perplexity to find and summarize my dissertation. It was confidently wrong about the title. It wrongly claims that I won a prestigious fellowship and offered 5 citations as proof.
The race for AI education has begun.
This news about the "Make America AI-Ready" initiative dropped today. This comes many months after other countries have implemented something similar:

Smooth marketing strategy: make people WANT inequality. Feed on their fear of becoming redundant. Get excited about getting ahead while others get fired.
A colleague asked me to look into Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) pedagogies and tools. Any recommendations?
Loved this talk by Prof Tang!
He argued that the criticisms of vibe coding (security loopholes, not timesaving, troubleshooting, etc) are relevant for industry coders, but not for DH'ers. When you only need to do specific tasks on a local machine, vibe coding is an accessible and effective option.
Fixed it! When uploading the dataset, make sure to select "advanced location options" and indicated "location information in multiple fields"
What am I getting wrong with ArcOnline geocoding? This is supposed to be a map of NYS lottery winners. The dataset include the location of retailers that sold winning tickets. OBVIOUSLY, there shouldn't be any outside of New York. And yet....
Thank you for sharing!
Our evaluation was tanked by one unprofessional reviewer who called the project "non-academic" and then complained about the review process (specifically, why he thinks it's wrong to include a "diversity" category).
Disrespect won't keep us down. We'll see you at the next conference. [3/3]
2) reflective (about the unique challenges of doing non-English DH at small liberal arts colleges), and, 3) content (revealing the networks of intellectual exchange during the Japanese empire based on journals and private archives). [2/3]
Welp, my paper "Putting It All Together: Small Data Approaches for the Humanities" didn't get accepted to DH2026. It has three sections: 1) theoretical (considering the value that cobbled together, incomplete, and manually gathered corpora contribute to historical research) [1/3],

I agree that it's time to move beyond dismissing the harmful potential of AI based on it's shortcomings. It's a temporary salve that makes us feel safe and superior. It is not a solution for the socioeconomic upheaval we are facing. [2/2]

After diagnosing the problem with ChatGPT as a coding coach (my post yesterday), I am now jumping on the bandwagon to try Claude. Will report back with my findings 🫡
One of my favorite things about the DH community is it's openness and transparency. I'm so happy to join it with my own blog!

I mourn for the debunked fuzzyjoin package in R. 😭
It would have made my life so much easier.
The stringr hex, a violin with text that says stringr, and Posit logo
ICYMI: stringr 1.6.0 🧵
This update brings performance gains and new fns for string manipulation in #RStats.

methodmatters.github.io/true-stories... Great blog post! Clearly, data analytics, data literacy, and communication are entwined skillsets.
padlet.com/csullivan211... A great hive-mind center where educators share challenges and solutions. I could imagine pulling examples from this page to kick-start discussions with faculty.
DH2026 proposal submitted! Fingers crossed we can all meet up in person in Korea 😁
Dear Friends, can you help me expand my network here? I want to learn more about what's happening in the DH world, especially regarding upcoming conferences. Let me know if you can recommend any pages or accounts to follow!
Today's the day I'm going to learn Python. Wish me luck!
So, are most folks using python + gemini to OCR non-English materials?
What if the materials have more than non-English language? Can it handle 3-4 language OCRing?
I've decided to use Excel to document my project management this academic year (I'm juggling at least 3 separate DH projects!).
Any tips for success?

Advice wanted! --> Have you published any born-digital scholarship? Would you recommend it to A) an early career academic? B) A mid-career academic? And/or C) an alt-ac? #academic #dh #digitalscholarship #digitalhumanities #academia #publishing
