Absolutely—Colorado’s experience since the Marshall Fire underscores how sustained investment in preparedness and community engagement is critical. Volunteer capacity is a cornerstone of resilience, but it has to be supported, not stretched thin.
Emergency management programs that protect communities are at risk.
Proposed cuts to FEMA preparedness grants would weaken how we prepare for disasters—and that has real consequences for lives and communities.

Embedding EI structurally does not dilute technical rigor. It strengthens adaptive capacity, trust, and public confidence — especially under crisis conditions.
Credentialing bodies cannot claim professional maturity while leaving relational, ethical, and regulatory competencies unmeasured.
Measurement is legitimacy.
If emotional intelligence predicts leadership effectiveness and ethical judgment, it should be explicitly mapped to accreditation criteria — not treated as informal expectation.
Professionalization is structural, not symbolic.
If emotional intelligence is absent from our professional architecture, legitimacy fractures.
