Pouring one out for all the librarians and archivists who are now confronting angry patrons demanding to see an item that doesn't exist because "AI told me it does."*

Is this a Gen Z thing, or a health care thing? I don't think I've ever been greeted any other way than sullenly at most of my doctors' offices. By clerks and nurses of all ages. Maybe their jobs just suck.

The ‘unregistered Americans’: because of their parents, they do not exist Hundreds in the US have no birth certificate or Social Security number. Some covet this ‘off-grid’ status – but it means being barred from ordinary life

Shocking article about a fairly unknown form of child abuse.

A tweet from Representative Thomas Massie that reads:

I just viewed 2 Top Secret FISA docs.
1) FISA Court opinion that raises serious concerns about FBI implementation of FISA 702.
2) letter by Senator Wyden describing a secret government interpretation of FISA law.
The Constitution requires I vote No on FISA 702 reauthorization.

I sent a classified letter to House and Senate colleagues about a secret interpretation of surveillance law that every American should be concerned about.

Representative Massie is right. The Constitution requires EVERY member to vote against a clean reauthorization.

The Car-Crash Conspiracy High-speed accidents, crooked lawyers, and poor people desperate for cash—it was the kind of scheme that could have been cooked up only in the Big Easy.

Pieces like this, deeply reported, full of colorful characters, and ultimately a window on complex social problems, are why I love The New Yorker. Slammers www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

When you add it all up, the collapse in immigration looks like this: a decline of roughly 50K for illegal (even including the people arrested and not released) and a decline of about 132K for legal. Over 70% of the cut in immigration has come from LEGAL immigration.

Interesting that Sharon Simmons, the Door Dasher from Arkansas at the White House, is also Sharon Simmons from Nevada that testified at a GOP Ways and Means field hearing about trumps ‘big beautiful bill’ in Nevada last year.

Really sad. We need quirky little colleges because there are lots of quirky kids who need nurturing to grow into quirky but brilliant adults. Big State U does not work for everyone.

Interesting thread. At my press, we don't let authors make huge changes to the proofs, so the ARCs aren't as different from finished books as hers were. But we don't give ARCs to scholarly journals because they might contain errors.

Policing, like surveillance is *infrastructure*--highways can bring groceries to your town but they can also bring tanks. The bigger you build the surveillance and policing system, the more and more likely you make it that they will be co-opted by the people who decide what deserves enforcement.

But doesn't he have lots of people who would pay him actual cash to become an ambassador? That's where we are now, right?

Duke Bought a Duplex That Housed a Thriving Community Space. Within Months, It Was Gone. Was That a Coincidence? The closure of The Living Room is resurfacing questions about what growth costs Durham.

Last fall, Duke bought a duplex that housed a pro-Palestinian community space. A few months later, it was gone, as was the longtime tenant next door. I looked into what happened:

“Why aren’t college students protesting” stories are almost always wrong (they are protesting), omit crucial context (they were brutally punished for protesting before), and somehow suggest that 19 yr olds have more moral responsibility than elected officials three times their age

With this settlement the US is worse off in every way than it was before the war; Iran is strengthened by the huge new tolls in the Straits of Hormuz, paid by the whole world. (1/14)
