"Why would someone like this? Is it just the gunplay, tense encounters, lore, and vibes?" I mean, yes? Those are appealing elements of a Good Video Game?
This is a really well assembled piece with a really well put perspective I've had on hits I didn't click with before in service of the Critical Instinct - one I have absolutely myself had before - to express that not liking something means it has bad elements, and not liking that is thus a virtue.

I thought we all agreed “wishlisting a different game entirely” is bad criticism but Marathon, like Destiny before it, gives us the green flag to do that apparently

You die and then a bunch of people tell you a new reason Chronos is a threat or reiterate the same reason. USUALLY, your first convo addresses one point, and then everyone else at base discusses the exact same point, at the same cadence, largely with the same opinion
I still like the mechanics, and the art and acting and music are still god-tier, but I’m just listening to great acting and not engaging with the text, which collapses the whole thing bc the evolving dialogue is the whole cushion to roguelike failures in these
Most of the game is just going “oh, so this is this version of that mechanic in the first game” - sure, I opened a tavern again, but I’m unclear why I did other than there was a tavern in the first one - and Mel is just as pleasant and decent as Zag, and I spent a hundred hours with him.
