Ep 1 of Akane-banashi aired today!!

With @mangamavericks.bsky.social, I interviewed Seisuke Araki-san, and Kazuki Endo-san, the editor of the manga/producer for the anime at last year’s Anime NYC!

I was SHOCKED & impressed to learn that all character animation was hand-drawn!! No CGI/rotoscope!

Flags and Fathers: The Creed Underneath OPLA Season 2 | Wavey Culture A companion essay to “Good Faith on the Grand Line.” Every Jolly Roger this season is a creed. Every creed was written by a parent. And the entire moral divide comes down to what those parents were…

New essay! “Flags and Fathers” picks up where last week’s OPLA review left off!

I traced the parenthood pattern across all 8 eps, then connected it to my grandmother

The moral I learned: parents are the flag you fly, but your sacrifices reveal your true self 🇩🇴🇺🇸🇯🇵

Burlap Sack's story embodies so much of what wuxia means.

Wuxia 武俠 is two separate words, you *must* have both to be wuxia, just martial arts is not enough, the Xia element must be present.

there are many great wuxia stories/games out there, lmk if you want recs!

The context for this owns so hard. She thought she had killed Kamen Rider because she had to rat him out or see her little brother killed (or something to that effect) and, of course, Rider manages to survive in a way only a hero can. He then tells her that she unequivocally did the right thing.

OPLA S2 review is up!

I wrote about how the Garp/Roger brotherhood seeds everything, how the Nika dance lays groundwork for Elbaf’s theology, & why every Jolly Roger this season is a creed. Named every cast member cuz they earned it!

“Flags and Fathers” next week!

So if using AI actually does erode human cognition the way studies suggest, then it's a feature instead of a bug?

The world is gross enough without "take away people's ability to think so we can sell it back to them" being on the list.

imo it's a bad faith description of when a social mp game finds success not bc of original design but bc of the social interactions it facilitates, and how incidental that can be.

frankly, the success of many games w this label /was/ incidental. but "friendslop" implies that success was undeserved.

Wrote a 3,000-word essay about the theology inside Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN.

XXX. and FEAR. are mirror-image tracks/the album plays forward & backward. A rapper from Compton and a Catholic from Washington Heights arrived at the same truth from opposite ends of America

If you’re anime-only, you’re experiencing someone else’s interpretation of the story.

Every translation is a set of decisions made by someone else on your behalf.

I wrote about this in the first essay on my new site:

I Needed a Map for the Culture War (So I Made One) I kept seeing the same online fights repeat and realized I needed a map. So I made one: a free, dense-on-purpose PDF about platforms, fandom, and the culture war.

I kept seeing the same online fights repeat and realized I needed a map. So I made one. Dropping a free PDF: Anime, Social Media, and the Modern Culture War — fandom + platforms + algorithms + literacy.

Crunchyroll revealed in an advertisement during its own free streams that it is halting free ad-supported streaming on its service on December 31. The company's subscription tiers and other ad-supported streaming channels are unaffected.

Only certain titles were available for ad-supported streaming without subscription, including: Cowboy Bebop, Chainsaw Man, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, My Dress-Up Darling, My Hero Academia, One Piece, Soul Eater, Spy×Family, Beast Tamer, Blue Lock, Bocchi the Rock!, Bungo Stray Dogs, Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro, Golden Kamuy, Horimiya, Kaguya-sama: Love is War, Lycoris Recoil, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury, Ranking of Kings, The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist In Another World, Vinland Saga, Yona of the Dawn, Blood Blockade Battlefront, Blue Exorcist, Corpse Princess: Shikabane Hime, Deadman Wonderland, Ghost Hunt, Hell's Paradise, Hellsing, Hellsing Ultimate, Higurashi: When They Cry – GOU, How to keep a mummy, Is This a Zombie?, Junji Ito "Collection", Kemono Jihen, Mieruko-chan, The Case Study of Vanitas, The Vampire Dies in No Time, Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun, Tokyo Ghoul, Trinity Blood, and Zombie Land Saga.

Crunchyroll had previously announced in March 2022 that it would no longer automatically offer free ad-supported viewing for all shows starting with its spring 2022 season line-up. Crunchyroll instead required that viewers have a subscription to access new and continuing simulcasts. The company added that the first three episodes of each title would be available for ad-supported viewing for a week after their premiere on Crunchyroll until a certain point, and subsequent episodes would be limited to subscribers.

Crunchyroll previously allowed free ad-supported streaming for simulcast titles one week after an episode premiered.

It's sad that we started with almost everything being available on Crunchyroll with ads after a week, and by the end it was only enough shows to fill a paragraph.

I never used ad-free Crunchyroll but I know people relied on it.

This is one of those things where a layman could look at it and go "amazing, that's really cool" but as someone who makes their living drawing I'll go, "No actually it's magic, it's absolute wizardry, you don't know how impossible it is that this guy made it look so effortless."

Wow: Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention (named for Holocaust survivor Raphael Lemkin, who coined term "genocide") calls Clinton's remarks "genocide denial."

"Young people in the US are not stupid or gullible. They simply reject genocide – something the Secretary might consider doing as well."

12/8/25: Catching up to One Piece (Chapter 1168) If you’ve ever felt uneasy about One Piece’s turn toward “destiny,” this is me trying to put that unease into words, as someone who’s lived with this series in weekly format for 17 years.

My first blog post in years comes courtesy of One Piece.
After 17 years of reading it weekly, the latest flashback has me rethinking how it treats freedom, fate, and resistance — especially as a Dominican-American reader.
(Spoilers through ch. 1168)

This is an awaited return to form where I get to flex my writing chops in a way I haven’t done in a long time… it would mean the world to me if you could engage with it in an intellectual way! I want to talk about the stuff I like/engage with in a critical but ethical way, deeper than surface level.
