It’s like if NYC started kicking all the buskers out of Times Square and bringing out riot buses to haul off NYE revelers while simultaneously advertising the square as the city’s biggest draw.

The press has written tons about the crossing in romantic terms (“a dance” - the NYT), the Shibuya government has gladly endorsed more billion dollar attractions in the area, and people who warned locals that the pop culture and internet fueled tourism wave was coming were mostly ignored.
