You might consider complaining to someone who has never lived in Boston, doesn’t spend a considerable amount of time covering the city, and who doesn’t pay Boston property taxes.
Further, in disputing my claim that most Bostonians drive, you… conceded that you, too, use a car in an area that I assume is not within central Boston, only confirming my data-backed point, so I have no idea what you’re complaining about.
The two issues you took with my piece were both empirically wrong. You accused me of not name-checking every single type of food (why would I?); and you seem to think you’re an expert on the transit system based on anecdote over fact, neither of which interest me as a reporter.
It’s not “your city.” I’m from Massachusetts—25 miles outside of Boston. I lived in Boston for many years and still own a residence in Boston. I went to graduate school in Boston and have covered this beat for years. Sit down.
I think you *might* be missing the point made by my article. I’m not claiming that anyone drives into downtown Boston. I didn’t, either, when I lived in the city—but I drove from one area to another. You seem really mad about this piece. You might want sit with that.
Fried clams are soft. Chowder clams can be a combination. Littlenecks are more common on the NS and are not quahogs.
Let’s assume you live in Seaport (why, idk) and want to go to Quincy to eat. That’s a very difficult transit barrier, that’s racially constructed and made worse if you have no vehicle.
Oh that’s not what I’m saying at all. I’m saying that if your goal is to get to these other areas of the city, you need a car! That the walkability of Boston that people claim is actually very limited—not to mention the brokenness of the MBTA.
66 percent of Boston households do, though, so I wasn’t writing that anecdotally, just so you know.
Also, 66 percent of Boston households own a car.
Also I live 25 miles away, to be clear.
I had a car when I lived in Boston, too, and so do many of my friends. Boston has an unusual resident parking setup for a tightly packed urban area.
JP is now a majority-white neighborhood due to gentrification, I’ll note. It did not used to be. Whether most neighborhoods offer diverse cuisine isn’t actually the point I’m making here, however.
I did not mention every food, no. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
For a long time, I’ve been sitting on how to talk about what’s eating me when it comes to Boston. I’m saying it here. tomatotomato.xyz/magazine/on-...

In April, my family and I traveled to the Chiriquí Province of Panama, which is roughly 300 miles southwest of Panama City. Our trip, facilitated by @blacktomatotravel, incredible. I’m thrilled that I can share it here, in @cntraveler.com.web.brid.gy

The Clam Box for sure (Ipswich). Probably Zeno’s (Ipswich), though I do think everyone should go down Revere Beach for a Kelly’s original at least once. I know everyone will say Modern Butcher (or probably Londi’s), but MB only serves on Saturdays and there’s always a line.
You definitely shouldn’t eat soft shell clams outside of Ipswich (or Essex, I’ll throw that out here). I agree with you there!
Don’t you friggin dare, kehd. First of all, I try never to be honest with myself. Second of all, it’s regional for a reason. I don’t go to East Boston to eat a three-way. Pizza? Sure. Fried clams or supah beef? Yah outta yah damn mind.
It’s what I’m sayin!
Can’t get these down in Suffolk!
I definitely wanna start a mean fight in the comments.
Truth. Three-way or nothing, and no, you can’t get it in Boston. North Shore or bust.
Ugly secrets. Parental politics. A body in the Ipswich River. VALLEY OF THE MOMS is out 6.16.26, and it's available to pre-order now. Pick up my debut novel here: www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/hanna...
