Thoughts on the Steam Frame. As someone who drives a Index it's certainly not a replacement, especially when it comes to FBT. I worry more about spare parts for the Index going away as nothing is really a good replacement in the market. Big Screen could be, but requires Index hardware to function.

Most come as FBX files, or FBX files packed in a unity package. You can import this into Blender, pose the model, and then export a STL for printing. If you only get a unity package, there are a few tools that can extract assets from them, or you can install unity to do this as well.
You can always try some VRChat avatar models. There are plenty of free ones you can try. Using Blender you can pose them and also bake the normal maps into a higher poly model for printing
