Reform UK unveils plans for Union flags and ‘patriotic’ history lessons in schools The party has announced a string of education policies ahead of St George’s Day

Patriotic history is what you get in dictatorships.

Mind you, Al Capone was keen on it, too.

In Norwich dragons are almost the city pet:

Love this. Think of the commercial opportunities too, if England (beyond Northumbria who are already fans) got into dragons properly? England loves pets and wildlife, time St George moved on from dragon slaying to dragon conservation and care!

Labour is laying the ground for Reform's mass deportations. Good article in the FT about Reform's and Labour's plans, though it seems to me that the threat of Labour's proposed reforms to UK citizens' spouses who don't work/work part-time keeps being underestimated.

When Labour inevitably gets humiliated at the local elections they will have nobody to blame but themselves. They have massively alienated a lot of core voters by chasing Reform with ever more hostile policies against migrants and other marginalised groups.

A catastrophic climate event is upon us. Here is why you’ve heard so little about it | George Monbiot Scientists say a crucial Atlantic system is set to collapse. But the billionaire death cult that steers humanity’s destiny just doesn’t do existential crises, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

While we are transfixed by the antics of our supposed "leaders", a catastrophe of astonishing proportions has been creeping up on us. Climate scientists now believe it is more likely than not to happen, and soon.
This week's column.

The Reform UK spokesperson I'm in contact with, in order to understand Reform policies, said "vox populi, vox dei"
I'm surprised he didn't say Deus Vult.

A note that if people on ILR and people on EUSS all lose their status and are made to apply for visas with a minimum wage level and minimum level of English, that's nearly 6 million people who will have to be processed every 5 years.

Reform wants to strip all people with ILR plus maybe all on EUSS.

At 70, I'm trapped in my £850,000 family house - I can't sell it Maureen Evans, 70, wants to downsize and give some money to her children

Everything about this story makes me feel faintly stressed. 1) Just accept where the market is and sell your home for c£700k. 2) For god's sake don't move into a smaller home on two floors, why do you want to do this again in 15-20 years? If you can't find a bungalow, this is what flats are for!

Former US Secretary of State John Kerry on Colbert: “Netanyahu presented the Iran War case to us too. The response was no. The prediction was regime change, that people would rise up. None of that happened.

“Obama said no. Bush said no. Biden said no. We were lied to about what that war was about.”

The Chornobyl disaster exposed the cynicism of the Soviet system and became one of the factors behind the USSR’s collapse.

Authorities concealed the scale of the catastrophe, prioritizing image over human safety and putting thousands at risk.

Bored of this already and expect better from guardian. The world is falling apart and this is your front page again? Being probably the only left leaning paper need to do so much better. The far right are on the march. Try to stop that shit not constantly undermine the only hope we have to stop it.

Archaeologists stunned to find copy of Homer’s Iliad inside ancient Egyptian mummy Papyrus fragment discovered inside mummy buried in Roman-era tomb around 1,600 years ago

An Egyptian funery technician cuts a few corners to save on costs and 1600 years later they're finally getting exposed as a shoddy operator, except everyone thinks it's really cool.

Is it too much to ask that government members behave with dignity and gravitas commensurate to their role, and don't do or say things that would get any of us in trouble in our much more ordinary jobs? Asking for a Home Secretary.

A reminder that what's more worrying than the likelihood of massive Reform gains in local (and likely Scottish) elections soon, is not just the individual 'politicians' who make up Reform, but that there are enough people who agree with them.
Of course what we can all do is make sure we vote!

A local tattoo artist posted a video on Instagram of him asking two blokes in hi-vis not to put up an England flag on the lamp post outside his shop. Consequence: a flood of bad Google reviews including the predictable “paedo” allegations (“he touched my daughter” etc). Truly the shittiest people.

Who could have guessed that decapitating Iran's existing leaders would create uncertainty about who on their side is actually empowered to negotiate?

Everyone.

Everyone could have guessed that.

I did not ask for this gift of prophecy, and in this case I did not need it.

good, productive feminism explains that gender isn't innate and the patriarchy can be deconstructed; essentially telling young women that all men are creeps and predators and will never change is actually just weirdly reactionary and purposeless

Not bothered by people who want Starmer to go. I agree. My reasons are selfishly practical - he lacks the vision and charisma to lead the UK through impossibly challenging times. What bothers me is when people cosplay moral outrage to not just oust, but destroy him, because it gives them a thrill.
