Today I got a wonderful invitation to give a keynote at a conference in South America which I would love to accept but the conference overlaps with one in Eastern Europe that I have already committed to giving a keynote at. What a shame.

Opinion: Kyiv’s Quiet Power: Leveraging Food Diplomacy Ukraine’s agricultural strength could prove to be a winning asset in building ties with the Gulf countries, now at risk of food shortages due to the war with Iran.

So much for the theory. Iran should allow fertiliser to pass through the Strait of Hormuz; America should not blockade urea shipments from Iran.
Tragically, neither shows any inclination to do so. High petrol prices make biofuel more attractive to farmers, not less. And rich countries are in a selfish mood. Failure to act thus looks baked in.
In the face of an avoidable disaster, that is shameful.

Fair but depressing conclusion from @economist.com - we could avoid some of the worst of the hunger, but we won’t

Luckily leaves are starting to appear on trees in @townofamherst.bsky.social so deer that seem to love our yard can eat them rather than the arborvitae which sustained them over our harsh, long winter.

Friday I had no meetings so it was a wonderful start to some intense #orms research on wicked problems that might also necessitate advances in methodologies. I'm very stubborn when it comes to solving problems that I'm extremely passionate about. Very grateful for disciplines that value research.

Beautiful day in @townofamherst.bsky.social for the reopening of the Amherst Farmers Market! Great to see previous vendors and new ones and even a hungry goat. We went overboard buying baked items, cheese and fresh produce. Saw many friends and made new ones. I love this time of the year!

It's a national suicide. I don't see any other way of looking at what's happening inside nearly every institution. American exceptionlism—if it ever existed at all—was our ability to create knowledge and culture. And we're destroying that capacity at scale.

Why are governments so completely spineless when it comes to the social responsibilities of companies? It creates vicious dynamics, all of which come back to then bite those same governments. It’s a losing strategy for democracies fully five minutes after they sign these kinds of deals.
