A fun collaboration between federalism scholars, @jos38.bsky.social & Antonios Souris, who bring the institutional questions, and experimentalists @lenamasch.bsky.social & me who bring a design to test them cleanly. A real fun pairing, and hopefully useful for both fields.2/8

perceived closeness as a function of empathic concern and perspective taking for various social groups

perceived closeness as a function of empathic concern and perspective taking for various social groups

We asked participants how close they felt towards various groups of refugees and found that individuals with higher levels of empathy (empathic concern and perspective taking) perceived others as closer.

We found that higher levels of empathy were linked to more favorable views of refugees and pro-refugee policies, such as the admission of refugees, their access to social benefits, and the granting of work permits.

We find only small effects of individual need for cognitive closure, but strong effects for pre-pandemic political trust and concurrent crisis trust in political and medical institutions.

1/ I promised some research for team #Bluesky. Here we go.

Unpopular opinion: #Debunking doesn't stop #polarization. In fact, our research (and others') shows it can *add* to it. #Prebunking works better—timing is key.

Our #simulation studies shed light on this. 👉
