I’ve resurrected an old post about how both Hieroglyphic, Chinese and Japanese write the word for the plant “sedge” with a pretty picture. But, how that “picture” is arbitrary and at the same time can contain phonetic information.

Many characters, including 真, became confused in the Eastern Zhou period. If its oracle bone form were found, it might clarify: was 真 originally depicting boiling a person alive?
