I work in retail and deal with self checkout machines daily. I'm extremely well acquainted with how they work, and I've got solid experience with customers who are actively trying to steal versus folks who make genuine mistakes.

And it's fairly easy to think an item scanned when it didn't. When that happens, it's a genuine accident, not theft.

That's a section of wall; it lines up with the wall on the other side to create the entryway into the kitchen. Why would there be an open space behind it such that a dog could move through? Also note that the dog doesn't angle around, it just moves in a straight line.
