As the child of two photographers, I deeply relate to feeling uncomfortable in front of the camera. It's so cool to see what Remy is doing with Halogen, the archive of images this project will create and Chloe's vulnerable reflections on it.
Remy Styrk is the driving force behind âHalogen,â a project offering free photoshoots to local trans people of color.
Photography can help trans people âdefine what autonomy and visibility mean to them,â Remy told Chloe Collyer, who shadowed a shoot for CHUM News:

If our mission and coverage resonates, consider becoming a paid subscriber. Perks galore: a snazzy CHUM News tote bag, a subscriber-exclusive monthly newsletter, annual credit to file a classified ad, a spot on CHUM's "Wall of Honor," and more:
We're proudly reader-supported, and transparently outline our monthly budget in our "About" section.
Our goal is to nurture a passionate, institutionally supported, adequately paid creative community that can buoy Seattleâs news landscape. And, budget permitting, launch a print publication!
And we've got a star-studded literary team. Fiction Editor Naomi Day and Poetry Editor Luther "Lue" Hughes commission thought-provoking works from local writers and poets â helping build a nurturing forum for the written word in the Seattle area.

Our illustrious Ferry Tales illustrator, Jed Judt, has an exquisite BFA exhibition on display at the 9th Ave Gallery (2014 9th Ave) through 4/17.
Go check it out!!
CHUMâs undercover deckhand, Albert A. Shorr, walks us through the intricacies of a crew change. Who gets assigned which jobs? Why does Larry the âcabin muffinâ get to watch TV and eat spare ribs while heâs on the clock? And whatâs up with Percy the pigeon?

Meet some of the characters running the show aboard the Washington State Ferries, as well as the quirky regulars riding along. đŚ

Saturdayâs celebrations for the launch of light rail over Lake Washington had it all: cute merch, verbose politicians, drumlines, transit furries⌠and Arielle Fantasia, a Seattle-based artist on assignment for CHUM News:

The contract with NYUPP is still being negotiated, the Mayorâs office told us.
When asked by @florangelad.bsky.social about NYUPPâs industry ties at last nightâs Town Hall event, Wilson suggested that she and her office are open to working with other auditors, if other viable groups exist.
On March 19, Mayor Wilson announced that the Policing Project, a NY-based think tank, would audit Seattleâs surveillance system.
Reporting by CHUM News alongside @soseaemerald.bsky.social raises questions about the auditorâs ties to policing-tech companies like Axon:

âTHE MORE DANGEROUS THE WORLD THE MORE DANGEROUS ITS BEASTSâ: a poem by Quenton Baker out today in CHUM News, featuring risograph-printed digital collages by artist and urban planner Mel Isidor.

In our latest Artist Convo, Meron Menghistab interviews local photographer Charissa Soriano.
Meron learns more about the personal experiences driving Charissaâs work, and asks why she centers hope, rather than fear, in âLiminal,â a project about immigration.
