Ah, in that sense I do agree. That seems an answer to the individual question of "how can I use this tool to make my work better?" which I think people conflate with the collective problem of how to deal with/prevent AI slop.

Are we sure that the writing output is much worse than the coding output? To a sociologist's eyes it might seem that way but maybe it is just bc we are worse programmers than writers.

How is verbatim text different than verbatim code though? Assuming equal quality of the two (which is questionable, but it feels like the rule is not pointing at that).

The Anxiety of Influence in Scholarly Writing

there are many out there thinking that it's beneficial to use AI tools for coding, but treat writing as a sacrosanct activity. I think this distinction is a mystification. I discuss why scholarly work is essentially a project, and it's about curating as much as it is refining:

Thinking that using AI to improve one's work is good is probably correlated with thinking of sociology as a science.

I think this is also tied to how we understand the role of a PhD. If a PhD is a student, then using AI to forgo learning is bad. If a PhD is a scientist, then failing to use AI if it can improve your work is bad, both to you and to science.

My guess is that this is similar to other professions. A combination of uncertainty and competition at the junior level and accumulation and concentration of success at the senior level.

And maybe, but some of the best paying universities are in areas where COL might have grown faster, hard to say

One thing to notice is that inequality at the full professor rank (gini = 0.136) is higher than at the AP rank (gini = 0.102)
