In Italy, since we've gone through Fascism, we've had to implement more checks: the judges of the Constitutional Court are nominated for 1/3 by the President (who in Italy has no executive powers), 1/3 by the Parliament, 1/3 by the highest courts for criminal, administrative and fiscal justice.
One of the reasons might be that the separation of powers is not well designed. For instance, the judges of the Supreme Court are nominated by the President, thus potentially biased.
