As Baroness Grender notes, 90% of UK MPAs are still exposed to bottom trawling - amounting to 20,000 hours of trawling in the past year alone 🐠

Bottom trawling causes irreversible damage to our oceans 🌊
Baroness Sugg highlighted how heavy nets used by large fishing corporations devastates marine life and threatens coastal livelihoods 🐟
Banning this gear in 41 more MPAs would be a major step forward
The final panel of Sarah Mukherjee of ISEP, Elisabeth Sullivan of techUK and David Steen of UKGBC urged the government to treat climate risks as cascading and interdependent rather than separate, and to work with nature not against it.
Our second panel of Megan Dunford of Zurich, Katherine Waters of WSP and Lucas Everitt of AtkinsRéalis detailed how flooding is the most significant climate risk the UK faces, and how gaps in the planning system are increasing the number of homes at risk.
We heard from Heather Shepherd and Louis Ramirez of Flooded People on the immense damage repeat flooding inflicts on communities. They emphasised the need for better recovery plans and an honest debate on what policy can achieve
On Monday, the Environment APPG held the first session of our inquiry: “Is the UK prepared? Resilience in floods, fires and food” with @fleuranderson.bsky.social , @adrianramsay.bsky.social, @werahobhouse.org.uk , Baroness Willis and Lord Harlech
🌊 Bottom trawling is still happening inside UK Marine Protected Areas
40% of England’s seas are MPAs, yet over 1.3m tonnes of fish were caught in them over just four years
Without proper protection, MPAs risk becoming little more than lines on a map 🐟

@earlrussell.bsky.social asks if the Minister can write to him to provide an update on the government’s Wildfire strategy and action plan, which is overdue.
Baroness Ritchie of Downpatrick encourages that the Minister ensure legislation is brought forward for a ban on the sale of peat for horticultural purposes.
Environment APPG member @bishopnorwich.bsky.social asks about the benefits of peatland restorations for flood resilience and nature recovery during Lords Oral Questions last Thursday 🌊

We're launching an inquiry into UK climate resilience.
2026 so far has made it abundantly clear that climate breakdown is already impacting the UK. Successive governments have assumed we have more time than we do.
We'll be looking into homes, infrastructure, food and nature.
Great to see Environment APPG member @carladenyer.bsky.social asking Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds about the introduction of a bottom-trawling ban at the Environmental Audit Committee. The Government has yet to respond to its consultation. 🌊 🐠
APPG vice-chair, @carladenyer.bsky.social, argued that as well as being bad for the climate, approving the UK’s largest undeveloped oil field, Rosebank, would do nothing to lower energy bills at home.
APPG member @werahobhouse.org.uk insisted that the UK’s dependence on fossil fuels caused by previous failure to invest sufficiently in renewables and home insulation led directly to the spike in energy bills in recent years.
The Chair of the Climate APPG @lukemurphy.bsky.social just called a debate on our progress in tackling climate change. The message was clear: we must double down and move faster, for the sake of our energy security, natural environment, and a liveable planet for future generations 👇
Our Chair, @lukemurphy.bsky.social explained how the UK’s climate ambitions are inextricably linked to our living standards and energy security. "This isn't an energy crisis, it's an oil and gas crisis"
This week, I'm taking part in The Big Plastic Count which means I'll be counting up the plastic I use every day this week to contribute to new evidence about the scale of plastic waste in our homes.

Environment APPG member @wendychambld.bsky.social highlights the importance of supporting people-powered initiatives such as The Big Plastic Count to tackle the plastic crisis in her piece below. 👇
The UK remains one of the world’s largest exporters of plastic waste, while recycling plants close at home. ♻️
The Environment APPG is working to stop plastic waste exports and build a stronger circular economy in the UK.

The Big Plastic Count is underway! ♻️ 🗑️
From 9-15 March, over 35,000 people will be counting all the plastic packaging they throw away.
Environment APPG Chair @fleuranderson.bsky.social is joining other MPs to support the Count.

🐬Great to see cross-party support from MPs at our reception for stronger marine protection🤝

Good to hear @fleuranderson.bsky.social at the @environmentappg.bsky.social event on the Global Oceans Treaty emphasise cross-party support for action: “The ocean does not recognise political divisions & nor should we in our ambitions for it.”
🐚 @oceansandy.bsky.social from @mcsuk.bsky.social reminded us that widespread public backing was central to the Treaty’s success, and that working closely with communities will be vital to strengthening marine protection in the years ahead 🤝
Kaleem Luthra from @ejfoundation.org warned of the damage caused by Illegal, Unreported & Unregulated (IUU) fishing - the third most lucrative illicit natural-resource crime
But there’s cause for hope - governments showed what’s possible by coming together around the High Seas Treaty🌊
