And to be fair, I just use my excellent Breville countertop toaster oven + air fryer. I won't actually deprive my family of crispy fries.

I almost returned it, but the hassle involved getting Home Depot to come pick it up was too much. And it wasn't broken or anything-- there was no "I morally object to the stove's coercive bullshit" checkbox on the return reason form.
I bought a pricey GE induction range to replace our old stove, and my biggest source of buyer's remorse (of several) is that the Air Fry setting requires you install their GE app and sync to the stove with Bluetooth.
I'll never give in though. No email for GE, no crispy fries for my family. π‘
hi!! do you make gameplay video content? are you interested in flying alpacas, tiny bears, dancing spirits, grizzled yet kindly wilderness men and beautiful women in tea shops with knives?? and if all of that were in cozy multiplayer game, would you think "dang I'd sure love to make videos of that"?
The start of a new series where I talk about game production and misc industry junk while showing off our game Spirit Crossing!

It was just one block.
As promised: Faces! π Here's a thread about some technical details for how stylized faces get made in Spirit Crossing. π§΅
The game is inspired by media like Ghibli and BotW, but our faces are unique. There was lots of early discussion about face style & we landed on dot-eyes early...
Hey folks so Iβm not good at this but, Iβm a Sr. Producer seeking work!

A little char design thread:
I haven't gotten to do much character design in my career so far, so it was quite fun to get to design a bunch of the NPCs who call Spirit Crossing home.
One thing you learn is that sometimes after 20 different hairstyles, your original plan was not too bad after all
In case you've been like "wow justin sure is posting about Spirit Crossing a lot"- it's because the spinout from Netflix means we are indie once more, and not only that- but are now joining the ranks of employee-owned indie studios! A very big step.
wishlist spirit crossing so you and your friends can hop off your flying alpacas to help strangers mine ore nodes
the hopping is actually ridiculously fun- if you are in a fluffalo follow chain, you can "dismount" hop to where the leader is

Hi!πI've been leading character art on Spirit Crossing with @spryfox.bsky.social for the last few years and, as I'm new to BlueSky, I thought I'd try sharing some of the work that's gone into making characters for an MMO over the next few months! Follow if you like characters and lil tech details π

at Spry Fox, we're interested in designing games that answer meaningful questions and inspire conversation.
..and sometimes that conversation is: what if there were little guys everywhere??
Something positive: Spry Fox is spinning out of Netflix. We are independent (once again!) and preparing to launch Spirit Crossing.
We wrote up a little blog post musing about this wild adventure. Worth sharing the good news.

One thing I've always been fond of is our windows.
Having contiguous exterior\interior spaces was important to us- but early on we realized interiors needed different ambient light from the exterior to feel properly cozy
I renewed at the West Seattle one recently and it was really smooth. I had an appointment but I saw walk-ins getting served almost as quickly. They've up their UX game!
Great article! I had to re-read your use of "churn" because it's so different from how we use the term in our studio. I think we've sort of back ported churn from the "player turnover" usage for describing planning overhead and turbulence.
A timeline visually representing the advice from my post, emphasising how dramatically and reliably having more time, with a testable build, converts to your game being better and your studio being safer.
I've been running an indie games studio for 15 years now, and it felt like a good time to boil down what I've learned into 4 pieces of advice:

I hope it's of use, not least because goddamn I forgot how long blog posts take to write.
Yeah, you could even combine it into a single spectrum/meter thing with "Passive" on one end and "Active" on the other, and you shift a needle along it based on your actions. Sort of like a stance-based fighter, only your "stances" are value bands on the meter.
Would they decay, either via time or performing the opposite activity style? Like if stay still to fill my Passive bar, then start running around doing Active-bar stuff, does my Passive bar drop?

This type of smart, walkable, mixed-use urbanism is illegal to build in many American cities
(...incidentally, it's very legal in Spirit Crossing)
I hate to ruin the holiday mood but we should really be talking more about the horrible conditions in Lemon Pig factory farms.
A fellow West Seattleite!
You know what tells you a lot about a society? Our LAWS.
What do we punish? Do we enforce them fairly? Do we think our laws are just?
So of course I made world-building game about thatβ¦

BTW, Spirit Crossing is coming to Steam. The goal is to create a major Cozy MMO with a huge population of folks making friends in a safe and welcoming space.
I deeply believe we can make the world a better place.
If this interests you, please wishlist!
